"Giving money towards the scholarship is amazing. It makes a huge difference to the recipients as this additional financial support can be the difference between succeeding and failing as a student. Having this extra support relieves financial stress and pressure which can only have a positive outcome for your health and wellbeing. To the donors I would say a big thank you."

Studying Child Development & Playwork

Playwork can be a very effective therapeutic tool and can be incorporated into numerous settings and services. I enjoy the flexibility Playwork offers and look forward to incorporating it into my work in the future.

Having previously worked in adult mental health services it became apparent to me the importance of supporting families and children, from a multi-disciplinary, holistic approach to ensure that children receive the support and interventions required at an early age to reduce mental health issues later on in life.

As a mature student, returning to education after such a long time can be challenging both financially and academically. Trying to juggle family life with studies, tests your multi-tasking and time management skills. Financially, budgeting family life on student finance can be difficult along with the added pressure of trying to find work to fit into your family and student lifestyle. However, I have found LBU to be an extremely supportive environment where my tutors, LBU staff and course mates show a genuine interest in you and offer whatever support they can to help you succeed.

As the course progresses, through placement opportunities and studying different modules I will be able to direct a specific career path over the next three years. My goal is to work with children and families who have been affected by trauma in childhood and through my life experience I aspire to support children and their families and motivate them to set and achieve their goals no matter what life throws at them. Sharing my positive experience of being a mature student I hope will inspire others to follow suit as I believe you are never too old to start again and never too old to learn.

How will the Bright Futures Scholarship help?

I will use the scholarship to increase my monthly family budget and will also use some of the funds to pay for transport and parking costs which will mean I can attend university more often, therefore taking advantage of the numerous opportunities on campus and will enable me to partake in group projects which will further enhance my study opportunities.
