Architecture Research Group, based in the Leeds School of Architecture, is established across fields of Architecture, Landscape, Interior and Urban Design, and consists of five current areas of Research Expertise in collaboration with both the School of Arts and the School of Built Environment, Engineering and Computing, as well as a multitude of university-wide and external research networks. Clusters of research expertise have been identified based on significant research strands led collaboratively by current staff and PhD in Architecture students, as well as connecting with research projects by postgraduate and undergraduate students. Each cluster also actively and in turn contribute to the shaping of the research culture at large in the school by organising expertise forums and public events, from research seminars, open lectures, specialist workshop to international symposia, disseminating research output, engaging networks of experts in the fields and encouraging opportunities of interdisciplinary and cross-institutional collaborations.

RESEARCH EXCELLENCE

Altogether, these clusters frame the Leeds School of Architecture’s research culture and excellence, and to support staff and researchers to achieve significant output towards not only REF 13 (Architecture, Built Environment and Planning), but also other related REF units such as REF 32 (Art and Design, History, Practice and Theory), as well as the challenges set by a further REF criteria of ‘leading a research group or a substantial or specialised work package’. The results of REF 2014 showed that overall 37 per cent of the Unit’s work is rated as world leading and internationally excellent (4*/3*) while 79 per cent is rated as internationally recognised or above (above 2*). We will continue to pursue high quality built environment, architecture and planning research with quality outputs that underpin a core aim to provide internationally recognised research and built environment education. In addition, our research will be designed to further enhance our external profile and reputation through providing research support to the construction industry and built environment professions.
