This February during Reading Week, 21 first year BA (Hons) Architecture students and two members of staff headed off to Barcelona for a study trip.

The three day trip included visits to some key historic and modern-day buildings including Antoni Gaudi’s Casa Mila and Park Guell, the Mies Van de Rohe Pavillion, Santa Caterina Market Hall by Enric Miralles and Museum Blau by Herzog de Meuron.

During their visits students were encouraged to photograph, sketch and experience each building, following on from desktop-based research they had each previously undertaken back in Leeds.

Overall the trip was a great success, serving as an excellent opportunity for students to gain inspiration and insight to help inform their own future building designs.

Yungwen Ho, one of the students who took part in the trip, said: "The Barcelona Architecture trip was an immersive experience that allowed us to witness the intersection of history, culture, and design. With help from Anna and Carma (academic staff who attended), we explored iconic landmarks like Sagrada Familia and Park Güell, expanding our architectural knowledge and providing inspiration for future projects.”

“This comprehensive and well organised trip fostered a deeper understanding of architectural trends, further enhancing our academic journey at Leeds Beckett."

Student Filip Nevyjel said: “The Gothic Quarter revealed stunning medieval structures, while modernist buildings showcased innovative design. The trip highlighted Barcelona's seamless blend of historical and contemporary architecture."

Jack Denton, also a first year student, said: “I thought that the trip was a really fantastic opportunity to explore a new place. During the day as a group we would explore the architectural sites, which were great. In the evening we had the opportunity to explore the city on our own.”
