Biomedical Sciences recognised for partnership with Leeds Teaching Hospital NHS Trust
The Leeds Beckett University Biomedical Sciences team have been nominated for an Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS) Award 2024, for a partnership developed with Leeds Teaching Hospital NHS Trust (LTHT).
The partnership, between LTHT Pathology and Leeds Beckett University Biomedical Science departments, was developed with the aim of providing students with relevant training opportunities to pursue their ambitions to become Biomedical Scientists and to develop the workforce of one of the largest and busiest acute hospital trusts in the country.
Members of the Pathology Training and Development Group worked with Leeds Beckett University (LBU) to achieve IBMS accreditation of the BSc Biomedical Science and MSc Biomedical Science courses back in 2018, enabling graduates to progress directly into qualified roles upon graduation. The collaboration grew with the development of the Applied Biomedical Science pathway in 2022. An optional pathway under the BSc Biomedical Sciences course, this integrated degree includes a 45-week placement in LTHT IBMS-approved training laboratories across a range of disciplines. This provides an excellent opportunity for students to complete their vocational training and become qualified upon graduation. In addition, pathology department staff have had the opportunity to become mentors to our students, and to deliver guest lectures.
So far, LBU have had almost 300 graduates with an IBMS accredited degree, developing and contributing towards the local and national Biomedical Sciences workforce.
Alex Liversidge, Senior Lecturer in Biomedical Science, said: “This nomination acknowledges the support we provide the students in preparing them for their vocational training and our appreciation of the training opportunities provided by the placement providers. I am pleased that this partnership has been successful in helping students become qualified Biomedical Scientists and embark on their careers in local NHS Hospitals.
“I look forward to developing the link between Leeds Beckett University Biomedical Science and other hospitals within the West Yorkshire Association of Acute Trusts (WYAAT) with additional placements being offered from September 2024 in Mid Yorks NHS Foundation Trust and Harrogate District NHS Foundation Trust."
The awards ceremony, which celebrates excellence in Biomedical Sciences across the UK, takes place on 28 June, in London.
