Leeds Must Do Activities
As you embark on this academic adventure at Leeds Beckett University, the vibrant city offers a treasure trove of budget-friendly activities to acquaint yourself with its rich tapestry of culture and history. From leisurely strolls through iconic landmarks to delving into the local arts scene, each month beckons with new adventures waiting to be uncovered.
September:
- Leeds City Centre Walking Tour: Take a stroll through the city centre, exploring landmarks like Leeds Town Hall, Leeds Kirkgate Market, and the Corn Exchange. It's a great way to get acquainted with the city's history and architecture
- Roundhay Park: Enjoy a day at Roundhay Park, one of the largest urban parks in Europe. Take a walk around the lake, have a picnic, or simply relax amidst nature
- Get ready for Freshers! Meet new people and spend some time getting to know your flatmates at this years Freshers events! Make sure to only buy your wristbands from trusted sources - Leeds Beckett Student Union being your best shout!
October:
- Light Night: Experience the Leeds streets you're growing to know be illuminated by spectacular installations and artworks and pop up performances! Across two nights you'll see Leeds' most recognisable indoor and outdoor spaces transformed. Get your phone ready - there's photo ops a plenty
- Go on a Ghost Hunt: From witches bones in hospitals, hidden jails underneath the city streets, to grisly histories of museums - Leeds has many tales to tell over the campfire. If you're brave enough here's a few to look out for as late night tours often pop up around Halloween; Thackray Museum of Medicine - with rumours of a woman in 18th century garments wandering around the recreation Victorian street you might hear a few unexplainable footsteps! If that's not enough legend has it within it's exhibits the museum once held the bones of witch who seemingly, even after her bones were moved, has not moved on herself. Abbey House Museum - opposite the ruins of Kirkstall Abbey there are rumours that the last Abbot of Kirkstall can still be seen wandering the halls. Leeds Town Hall - one of the most famous haunted buildings in the city with stories emanating from the bridewell cells below, seemingly one of the prisoners who stayed there awaiting execution returned after causing a number of strange things to occur
- Kirkstall Abbey: Speaking of Kirkstall Abbey, if you're looking to get some fresh autumnal air give Kirkstall Abbey a visit, a historic Cistercian monastery ruins located along the River Aire. It's a picturesque spot for a leisurely afternoon walk and offers insight into Leeds' medieval past
November:
- Leeds Corn Exchange: Spend an afternoon browsing the shops and stalls at Leeds Corn Exchange, a Victorian-era trading hub now home to independent retailers selling everything from vintage clothing to handmade crafts
- Hyde Park Picture House: Catch a film at Hyde Park Picture House, one of the oldest cinemas in the UK. They often screen indie films and classics, providing a unique cinematic experience
- Royal Armouries Museum: Visit the Royal Armouries Museum, home to a vast collection of arms and armour from around the world. Admission is also free, and the museum offers interactive exhibits and demonstrations
December:
- Leeds German Christmas Market: Get into the holiday spirit at the Leeds German Christmas Market, where you can shop for traditional crafts, enjoy festive food and drink, and soak up the seasonal atmosphere
- Ice Skating at Millennium Square: Lace up your skates and hit the ice at Millennium Square, where an outdoor ice rink is set up during the winter months. It's a fun and festive activity to get the whole flat involved in!
- Thor's Tipi: Enter another world through Scandinavian tipis dressed up with festive greenery & dressed with Viking inspired elements. Cosy up to roaring fires, or snag a seat at the windows to watch the Christmas hustle and bustle! If you head over on Thursday evenings you'll often find live music to accompany the great range of festive favourite drinks and classic cocktails
January:
- Leeds City Museum: Spend a day exploring Leeds City Museum, which showcases the city's natural history, archaeology, and social history through interactive exhibits and displays. Admission is free, making it accessible for students on a budget
- Leeds Waterfront Walk: Blow off the cobwebs with a wander down the Leeds waterfront, starting at Granary Wharf and ending at Clarence Dock. Enjoy views of the canal, historic buildings, and modern developments along the way
- Escapes Rooms: Get the gang back together and put your luck and skills to the test with one of Leeds' many escape rooms. Escape Hunt is often recommended by residents as a must do activity for Freshers. Choose from several different themed rooms or grab some comfy walking shoes and head out on a city wide scavenger hunt!
February:
- Chance & Counters: For just £2 an hour you have access to a giant library of 500+ board games. All that's left to do is sit back and let the competition commence while you enjoy one of the 10 lines of top notch craft beers and cider from Yorkshire & beyond, or a proper espresso & tea from Clifton Coffee. If you're hungry for more than victory they also serve up smash burgers, loaded fries, wings and much more!
- Meanwood Valley Urban Farm: Explore 24 acres of woodland and working farm, home to goats, sheep, hens, donkeys, and... alpacas! February also marks the start of lambing season, so if you're lucky you might spot a few fluffy little baby sheep!
- Leeds Brewery Tour: Embark on a brewery tour of one of Leeds' local breweries, such as Northern Monk Brewery or Kirkstall Brewery. Learn about the brewing process, sample different beers, and enjoy a taste of the city's craft beer scene
March:
- Leeds Central Library: Assignments due? Spend a quiet afternoon studying or reading at Leeds Central Library, a historic library located in the city centre. Explore its vast collection of books, periodicals, and resources, or attend a literary event or workshop
- Comedy Cabaret: Laugh the night away with top and up-and-coming comedians perform stand-up sets in a fun and lively setting. Large parties are welcome and there's discount available for students, making it a great way to unwind with the whole flat
- Leeds Urban Bike Park: Get active at the Leeds Urban Bike Park, where you can ride mountain bike trails, pump tracks, and skill zones suitable for all ages and abilities. Bring your own bike or rent one on-site for a day of outdoor adventure
April:
- Leeds City Varieties Music Hall: Experience a night of entertainment at Leeds City Varieties Music Hall, a historic venue that has hosted music, comedy, and variety shows for over 150 years
- Bongos Bingo: If you haven't had a go at this particular brand of bingo - now's the time. Think a crazy mix of traditional Bingo, dance-offs, rave intervals, audience participation and pure nostalgia, offering participants the chance to be in it to win it at the 02 Academy
- Brudenell Social Club: Another must have Leeds experience - if you haven't been to a gig at the Brudenell try to squeeze one in before you head home for summer!
