Move Out Checklist
Can you believe it? The final weeks in your halls are here, and it’s almost time to say goodbye to your room! Moving out can feel overwhelming, but don’t worry! We've got you covered with this checklist to ensure your move-out process is smooth and stress-free.
1. Start Early
It's easy to put things off until the last minute, but trust us, starting your move out preparations early is key. Aim to begin at least two weeks before your move out date.
2. Sort and Declutter
Decide what to keep, donate, sell, or toss. This will not only make packing easier but also give you a fresh start.
- Keep: Items you’ll need for your next place.
- Donate: Clothes, books, and items you no longer use - look out for British Heart Foundation donation boxes in reception!
- Sell: Textbooks, furniture, or electronics you don’t want to take with you. Websites like eBay, Depop, or Facebook Marketplace are great for this.
- Toss: Anything broken or worn out.
3. Organise Your Subscriptions & Forward Your Post
Remember to cancel or transfer any subscriptions or memberships. Don’t forget to update your address for any important mail, like bank statements and update the autofill address on your phone.
Remember, neither the University nor Halls Management are responsible for forwarding or redirecting any post after you leave. Make sure you redirect all your mail before you leave.
4. Clean, Clean, Clean
At the end of your licence, it’s super important to leave your room in the same condition as you found it. The University can charge for the proper and reasonable costs of clearing your room if you don't meet the standards outlined in your licence agreement. Save money by doing it right yourself! Make a checklist for each room:
- Kitchen: Clean appliances, cupboards, and surfaces. Defrost and empty the fridge/freezer.
- Bathroom: Scrub the toilet, sink, shower, and floors.
- Living Areas: Dust, vacuum, and wipe down surfaces.
- Bedrooms: Clear out drawers, vacuum, and clean windows.
5. Maintenance Requests
If you've been putting off making maintenance requests for something in need of repair in your flat, now is the time to do it.
6. Pack Smart
Start packing non-essential items first. Label your boxes clearly with the contents and which space they belong to. This will make unpacking much easier at your new place.
- Pro tip: Keep an essentials box with items you’ll need immediately after moving, like toiletries, a change of clothes, and basic kitchen supplies.
7. Check Carefully for Valuables
If you accidentally leave any valuables behind, the University or Hall team will try to contact you to arrange collection. You’ll have two weeks from the end of the licence period to pick up your items. If you need them mailed, it’s at your own risk and you may have to pay postage costs. If they can’t reach you or you don’t arrange collection or postage within two weeks, they might donate your items to charity or, if you owe money, sell them to cover your debt. Items not of obvious value, like clothing, may be disposed of without contact.
8. Return Your Keys
Make sure to return your keys to the main reception office at your residence on or before the last day of your licence. If the keys need to be recut so the room can be re-let, you’ll be charged for the cost plus a reasonable administration fee.
