Leeds Beckett University Sports Awards 2022
Members from Leeds Beckett University’s Athletic Union celebrated their triumphant return to university sport at the Leeds Beckett University Sports Awards.
University sport, including British Universities and College Sport (BUCS) competitions, returned in September 2021 after a two-year hiatus due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Since the return of university sport to the academic calendar, Leeds Beckett University’s sports teams have enjoyed success on and off the field.
Clubs, teams, individuals, and volunteers’ successes were celebrated at the Leeds Beckett University Sports Awards. The awards recognise performances on the field as well as contributions individuals and clubs have made away from the action in a bid to support charities and the Athletic Union.
England Women’s Rugby League superstar Kelsey Gentles headlined a list of inspirational winners from this year’s awards, being crowned Leeds Beckett University Sportswoman of the Year after a stellar season for club and country.
Leeds Beckett University Gymnastics’ Luke Whitehouse was crowned Sportsman of the Year, having competed internationally for Team GB in Doha and Croatia. Luke also became the first British athlete to complete a triple back flip in a competitive floor routine.
Carnegie Volleyball’s Kenzie Preston was named the Sports Personality of the Year by her peers, with 47.1% of the votes.
In the club categories, Leeds Beckett Tennis Club claimed the Performance Club of the Year award, while Leeds Beckett Hockey were named Participation Club of the Year.
Gymnastics received a second award on the night, receiving the Most Improved Club award after making their Leeds Varsity debut.
The Team of the Year award was given to Carnegie Competition Cheerleading Purple team for their unbeaten season and being crowned Grand National Champions.
Leadership Academy coach Toby Draper received the Student Development award for his support of the tennis junior programmes, while James Atkinson was named the Club Officer of the Year for his significant contributions to the hockey club.
Tennis coach Paul Johnson was the proud recipient of the John ‘Tats’ Harkins Unsung Hero award for his relentless dedication to the club in his interim role as head coach.
Paul’s commitment to supporting students on and off the field, growing the club and balancing his other coaching commitments saw him recognised for his efforts.
Athletic Union Coordinator Harry Robinson said:
“After two years of virtual award ceremonies it was great to hold the event in person and celebrate the amazing achievements of our students together.
“The event was a huge success and the students that attended the ceremony had a great time. All of the winners have shown great determination and commitment to their sport over the past season. Congratulations to all of our winners."
