Last December, Iwan was re-signed with Leeds Rhinos through his affiliation with Leeds Beckett, a university partnership which has proved invaluable for over a decade. Throughout his tenure, Iwan has also played for England Universities Rugby League team in the Four Nations and Presidents Cup, emerging victorious and unbeaten throughout both tournaments.

“The link between Rhinos and Beckett allows players who have been missed previously to be given an opportunity to progress,” Iwan explains. “I’m fortunate to have a contract at Leeds Rhinos for this season, which has allowed me to focus on my university degree and Rugby without worrying about getting an additional job.”

Beginning his sporting career as a Halfback, Iwan quickly transitioned to Fullback with the help of Leeds Beckett Rugby League Head Coach, Jamie Jones-Buchanan, and Assistant, Blake Austin. He describes them as “massive in teaching me the position” which was something completely new to Iwan, going on to play all of his games in the England squad in this new position.

This upcoming season will see the Leeds Rhinos Scholarship Head Coach, Mark Butterill, leading the men’s Rugby League coaching, with assistance from Jamie Jones Bucanan who will be focusing on other aspects of the partnership with the university. Mark’s arrival enables Leeds Beckett to establish a seamless link between the university programme and the Rhinos academy and reserves, creating a structured pathway for talented university players to transition into the professional Rhinos programme.

In terms of future plans, Iwan’s journey could involve returning to Headingley Campus. “In a few years, I may decide to come back and do a Masters degree, on a part-time basis,” he explains. However, in the present moment, Iwan’s sight are set to embark on working full-time from September: “I’m starting a graduate scheme role when the Rugby League season finishes,” he says, “which I’m really looking forward to.”
