Anti-doping experts from across the globe will converge in Beijing, China on October 24-25 for the Second World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) Global Education Conference. The event will draw representatives from a range of anti-doping stakeholders from International Federations, National Anti-Doping Organisations (NADOs), National Governing Bodies (NGBs), and Universities.

While the programme includes presentations and discussions on a range of topics linked to the overarching theme, ‘Innovation, Harmonisation and Cooperation’, discussion related to the new International Standard for Education will be central to the conversation. The Standard is being developed with the view to provide a harmonised approach to anti-doping provision worldwide and the contents of the document are in the final stages of development.

Professor Susan Backhouse and Dr Kelsey Erickson from the Carnegie School of Sport will share their research findings from the team’s ongoing programme of research. They will also actively engage in discussion related to this important development in anti-doping education efforts. During the event, Prof Backhouse will speak to the importance of taking a holistic approach towards clean sport and emphasize the need for a systems approach to take action on the dopogenic environment. Dr Erickson will then share insights pertaining to the Clean Sport Bystander Intervention Program – RE>ACT (which stands for ‘recognize’ and ‘take action’; www.leedsbeckett.ac.uk/react), highlighting the program’s impact to date and future developments.

Supporting the WADA by translating research into evidence-based policy and practice is a key priority for members of the Sporting Integrity research team at Leeds Beckett University. Efforts of this nature have been ongoing among the group since Prof Susan Backhouse was first commissioned by the WADA to conduct a literature review on anti-doping research in 2007. Since then, the research team have contributed to the WADA’s efforts through multiple research projects, advising on policy developments and membership within steering groups. The upcoming Global Education Conference will serve as a further opportunity for Leeds Beckett University experts to draw upon the evidence base that they have created to accelerate efforts to protect the rights of athletes to participate in sport free from prohibited substances and methods.
