From classroom learning to real impact
MSc Responsible Tourism Management alumna, Léa Jacquot-Benson shares what she's been up to since graduating.
During the pandemic, I studied MSc Responsible Tourism Management, entirely online while the tourism industry was at a standstill.
The MSc in Responsible Tourism Management, certified by the UNWTO.TedQual, is unique globally. It prepares students for careers in sustainable tourism, focusing on responsible management strategies.
In the Natural Resources Environmental Management module, module led by Dr Kyriaki Glyptou, we developed Environmental and Climate Action Plans for real tourism businesses. These businesses were early signatories of Tourism Declares a Climate Emergency, mainly international small and medium enterprises (SMEs) eager to adopt climate-friendly initiatives despite facing significant challenges. This experience provided us with practical skills and potential career opportunities.
Two years after graduation, this experience led me and a classmate to Mongolia, guided by the team at Eternal Landscapes, a tour operator my friend had collaborated with during our coursework. From bustling Ulaanbaatar to the serene Khovsgol Lake, the places and people left a lasting impression on us.
Upon returning, we contacted Jessica Brooks, co-founder of Eternal Landscapes, to help promote their initiatives. Jess proposed Chandmana Erdene, a tourism training center for women near Ulaanbaatar, designed to provide transformational training programs. This initiative addresses significant social challenges in Ulaanbaatar, where many women face unemployment, financial struggles, and gender discrimination.
Chandmana Erdene, developed in collaboration with East Guides West and GerHub, will offer a comprehensive training program combining self-paced learning, practical activities, and interactive components. The centre will include a training facility, guest accommodation, and a community green space, adhering to circular economy principles and involving the local community.
With the Mongolian government declaring 2023-2025 as the “Years to Visit Mongolia,” this is the perfect time to establish this program, stimulating the local economy and advancing women's social equity. We are seeking US$300,000 in funding to bring Chandmana Erdene to life. If you can help, please get in touch.
