Sport for Development and Peace in the Americas: Funded Project
Dr Renan Petersen-Wagner from the Carnegie School of Sport has secured R$160,000 (£21,000) in funding from the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq), under the Brazilian Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation. This funding is part of the open call ‘CNPq/MCTI/FNDCT nº22/2024’, which aims to bolster Brazil’s scientific, technological development, and innovation through collaborative research projects with Brazilian researchers abroad.
The project, which will span two years from 2025 to 2027, is set to explore the agents involved in social projects within the sport sector in the Americas. It will delve into their perceptions of sport as a tool for achieving the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. The research network involves three other co-applicants: Dr Billy Graeff from the Federal University of Rio Grande, Brazil; Dr Jorge Knijnik from Western Sydney University, Australia; and Dr Luciano Jahneka from Universitad de la República Uruguay. Dr Renan will be leading the media analyses focus area of the project.
The project will encompass the collection of both primary and secondary data, with a focus on generating academic and general public dissemination materials. A highlight of the project will be the organisation of four distinct events in Brazil, including an Advanced Studies Summer School in Sociology of Sport to be held at the end of 2025.
