Tell us a bit about yourself and what you've been doing since you graduated?
My current job role is a Physical Development Coach, working with elite youth football players at Leeds United. I graduated from Leeds Beckett in 2022, I was part of the first cohort of the new Science of Sport Performance undergraduate degree. After this I was lucky enough to complete a Masters by Research whilst being embedded at Leeds United Academy. Once I had finished my Masters I managed to get my first full-time job in football working with the 9s-16s for a year, I now currently work with the scholarship players.
What have been the highlights of your career so far?
Developing some of the best young talents in the country. I've had many opportunities to learn from experienced coaches which has helped me develop massively. I have also had opportunities to go on oversees tours, experience some of the best stadiums in England and also helped progress our academy players in youth competitions and into first team football. It's a job I feel very fortunate to have and extremely grateful for how I got here.
Tell us about your job, what does this entail and did studying at Leeds Beckett help you get there?
I deliver both on pitch and gym based physical development sessions, with the intention to make the players robust and meet the future demands of senior football. I also work with a wider MDT to help aid long term athlete development. Leeds Beckett helped me get my foot in the door at many different clubs around Yorkshire. Most of my lecturers had worked in elite sport which helped me understand what I needed to do to work in the industry.
How has your experience studying at Leeds Beckett influenced you and your career?
Leeds Beckett helped me get my first internship at Bradford City FDP, and also Leeds Rhinos, without this experience I probably wouldn’t be working in sport now. I learnt a lot from my lecturers and they were very open about speaking about their experience in industry, so I got loads of advice on what to do with my career.
What attracted you to study your course at Leeds Beckett University?
The main reason I chose Leeds Beckett was because of the links it had with the elite sport clubs. When I started the new School of Sport building was also being built which now has some of the best sport facilities in the world. The campus is also based in Headingly which is a great place for students to live and it has a community feel on there.
What did you enjoy about your course and what advice would you give someone thinking about studying this course?
The practical seminars were my favourite because you got a real hands on experience. My advice to students would be to get stuck in and be as busy as possible for three years. Try everything there is to offer, be the person who asks the question in lectures and seminars. This will help you get opportunities down the line. Also make sure you are getting some experience in the area you are working in during your degree, even if this is grass roots coaching. Try not to wait until you have finished as you will be behind other people.
What's next for you?
I want to continue learning and keep helping develop the youth players at Leeds United.
