What were you doing before becoming a postgraduate student?
Before I started my postgraduate studies, I was taking a gap year after finishing my Bachelors at Leeds Beckett University. I was doing several internships back home in Indonesia, working for a magazine and doing marketing content for a hotel.
What reasons motivated you to consider studying a postgraduate course?
I wanted to expand my portfolio and my skillset in the hopes that it would make me more employable. I studied Journalism for my Bachelors, and decided that it would go hand in hand with PR & Strategic Comms. Also if I'm being really honest, I loved every moment of uni life and wasn't ready for it to end!
Why did you choose to study your postgraduate degree at Leeds Beckett University?
I completed my Foundation Year and my Bachelors at Leeds Beckett University, so it seemed like the obvious choice. My particular Masters course had excellent ratings as well. I did consider other universities and got accepted into Sheffield Hallam, but chose to return to Leeds based on my great experience both in the city and at the uni.
What were the challenges or obstacles you had to overcome to become a postgraduate student?
Most of the challenges came before I began the course. I had a lot of anxiety about how difficult the course would be compared to a Bachelors, a lot of self-doubt about whether I was capable of it, etc.
How would you describe your experience as a postgraduate student and what was the highlight?
In hindsight, I didn't have to worry as my postgrad was probably one of the best times of my life, believe it or not! I'd say the highlight was meeting and working with other international students. There were only a couple of other international students on my Bachelors, but my Masters was 80% international, from all over the world. This was such a great experience as I've made friends for life.
How would you describe the University's facilities, teaching staff and employability and support services?
I'd rate these facilities well and didn't feel like anything was lacking. There was a point where I needed the support services for my mental health and although it was tricky to get an appointment at first (understandable), they managed to fit me in and I was treated with kindness, patience and understanding.
What role did your fellow students play in your experience at Leeds Beckett?
As mentioned above, my fellow students were the highlight of my postgrad. I also worked as an international student ambassador and got to meet some amazing people.
How has postgraduate study benefitted your career? What impact have you experienced after your course?
It's taught me many skills that I use in my work now, from research and writing to communication skills. Although I'm working for myself, I'm still applying a lot of knowledge that I've learned from my postgrad.
Would you recommend postgraduate study at Leeds Beckett?
I would 100% recommend postgrad study at Leeds Beckett, especially for international students. Courses aside, it's such a friendly and welcoming place, with so much support available.
How would you describe your postgraduate experience in five words?
Worthwhile, memorable, fun, supportive, fulfilling.
What advice would you give to someone considering postgraduate study at Leeds Beckett?
Make the most of the experiences on offer. There are guest lectures, talks, events and other opportunities, and you should definitely check them out. Also, you will need help at some point and don't hesitate to ask for it - most lecturers and support staff are more than happy to help you out.
