2022 graduate Mu throwing his hat in front of a purple '22' sign

Mu Lakhi is a class of 2022 Leeds School of Arts graduate. Below he discusses his experience on his course.

What was your favourite part of studying Filmmaking at Leeds Beckett?

I think my favourite moment was screening my graduation film for the first time in front of all my peers, and it getting the response I wanted it to. It’s something I was worried about when I was making it, but people applauded and laughed at the right moments, and that was one of the happiest moments I’ve had.

There were lots of joyful moments throughout my time at university, another one would be coming back onto campus after the pandemic. Having the social aspect again was great. Being able to speak to people that I hadn’t spoken to in ages and making more connections bought me a lot of joy, and reminded me why I was at film school.

What were the facilities like?

I got to study in the new Leeds School of Arts Building in third year. There were a few setbacks before that because of Covid, but it was worth the wait.

When I got into the building for the first time, I thought to myself ‘yeah, this is where I want to be’, I’m very glad that I got to experience them before I graduated.

Did you overcome any challenges at university? How did it make you feel?

To be honest, the whole of 2020! Not just the pandemic, but also having my lung collapse, it was probably the worst year of my life. But somehow, I managed to power through, I didn’t drop out – I focused on the fact that this is what I want to do and this is what makes me happy. I’m so glad that I got through that year and all the things that happened, and proud to be at the point I am now.

Did you feel supported by the staff at Leeds Beckett?

There was lots of support from the tutors, and people, in general, were nice about what we were doing and were really supportive. I’d like to shout out Andrew, my directing tutor, because he is the reason that I got the grade that I did. He pushed me to persevere and pitch my graduation film again after it didn’t get through the first round of the selection process. I followed his advice and I’m so happy that I did because I’m really proud of what I’ve achieved with my time here.
