Leeds Beckett students produce magazine alongside Fashion Revolution
Find out more about the collaboration between Leeds Beckett and Fashion Revolution to produce the magazine 'Sewing the Seeds: Fashion Activism in the North of England'.
Following the success of their renowned Fanzine series, Fashion Revolution partnered with Leeds Beckett University to produce a magazine dedicated to the fashion activists of Northern England. The magazine is called Sewing the Seeds: Fashion Activism in the North of England. Students from across our Fashion courses, and the wider School of Arts, were paid contributors to this issue which shines a light on the sustainable and grassroots fashion ecosystem in Leeds.
Fashion Revolution are the leading organisation campaigning for a more ethical fashion industry. Their Fashion Transparency Index has become the leading tool to force the world's fashion brands to be more transparent about their social and environmental efforts. Fashion Revolution also organise Fashion Revolution Week. This is an annual campaign event which brings together Fashion revolution's 75 country network for seven days of activism.
Betty Wales-Hubert, an MA Fashion alumni who graduated in August 2024, was involved in the project: "Fashion Revolution was formed after the Rana Plaza disaster in 2013 and has not stopped trying to change the fashion industry for the better since then. Their latest zine, in collaboration with Leeds Beckett Sewing the Seeds, focuses on showcasing all the unsung talent in the north of England, which I feel is imperative."
"I feel so grateful to have been commissioned to write my piece on classism within the sustainability movement for a wonderful organisation that shares my values."Â
Richard Hudson-Miles, Senior Lecturer in Critical and Contextual Studies who teaches on the Fashion courses at Leeds Beckett, added: "This collaboration with Leeds Beckett fashion has shone a light on various forms of hidden fashion activism in our region. It has also given a platform to many young creatives whose work has never appeared in print before".
