Tiled background

Since my last blog, I have been focused on developing our reporting capabilities around impact. Over 40 academics from across all Schools have now been trained on the Symplectic Impact module, which means that we can now more effectively identify underpinning research; track activities, and log impact evidence for any projects with impact relevance. This will significantly help with the university’s reporting for the next Research Excellence Framework (REF), as well as providing researchers with a central repository for logging their impact evidence.

Want to learn more?

I am planning to run bi-monthly training sessions on the Symplectic Impact module for research active staff, where you can learn how to log and capture evidence of impact within your academic projects. The next session is scheduled for Friday 2 May, 11:00 – 12:00, online - sign up here to attend.

Full step-by-step guidance on how to use the Symplectic Impact module can also be found on our library pages under ‘How to Add Impact & Engagement to Symplectic’.

New Impact Teams channel

We now have an Impact Teams channel, with sits within our LBU Research Community Teams group.

I’ll be using this channel to provide regular updates on any impact related news/developments; and to provide details of upcoming internal and external training and events, as well as providing a suite of useful resources and templates to support you in your work.

If there are any particular resources/guidance documents that you would be interested in seeing in the resources section of the site, please let me know!

Upcoming impact training and support

I’ve been working closely with our fantastic Researcher Development team on a series of impact training sessions for staff, so have included details of upcoming training below.

  1. Introduction to Impact (Tuesday 29 April, 11:00 – 12:00, online). This session will explore the concept of research impact—how academic work influences society, policy, the economy, and beyond. We will discuss what impact is (and what it isn’t!), why it matters, and how researchers can plan for, track, and demonstrate the real-world significance of their work.
  2. How to Write a Policy Brief (scheduled for the second half of 2025), details to follow.
  3. Integrating Impact into Your Project Plan (dates tbc).
If there is any other impact focused training that you would like to see, please let me know, so that I can plan in from 2025 onwards.

And remember – do get in touch!

As a reminder, I work within the Research and Enterprise team at LBU, and can often be found working from The Knowledge Exchange. I’d be really interested to hear about your research (and challenges) so that I can understand how I can most effectively support you, so please do reach out for a chat.
