Deseimi is a MSc Health and Safety alumna working in the construction industry. Driven by curiosity, she gained valuable knowledge and experience whilst at Leeds Bekcett which fuelled her passion for growth.
In this blog, she talks through her career and reflects on her time at Leeds Beckett.
Why did you choose to study at Leeds Beckett?
I chose Leeds Beckett because its course modules provided valuable insight into real-world work experience while offering a comprehensive educational foundation. Compared to other universities offering MSc Health and Safety programmes in the UK, the courses here are more closely aligned with practical UK work environments, making it an ideal choice for my academic and professional goals.
Tell us a bit about yourself and what you've been doing since you graduated?
I am naturally curious and eager to ask questions and seek more knowledge. I pride myself on being jovial, caring and a supportive team player, ensuring no one on my team is left behind. Outside of work, I enjoy movies, afrobeats, and rest. I aim to achieve a balanced life with a thriving career and a happy family.
After graduation, I secured a graduate role and started working immediately. My current role as a HSEQ (Health, Safety, Environment and Quality) graduate has been an enriching experience, allowing me to blend my academic background with practical insights, significantly broadening my expertise. I have been responsible for completing monthly HSEQ inspections, working without supervision, engaging with internal and external audits and I have been involved with investigations to reduce reoccurrence. I have also developed toolbox talks for sites and managed document control on sites.
What have been the highlights and challenges of your career so far?
I have encountered challenges such as adapting to the dynamics of the business world, including working with diverse teams where personalities and responses vary greatly. Adjusting to new team members and navigating different backgrounds has been insightful. However, my ability to learn quickly and eagerness to grow has allowed me to gain far more knowledge than I anticipated. Notably, I’ve had the opportunity to audit BSI 45001, 9001, 14001, and 15001, receiving positive feedback for my contributions.
How has your experience studying at Leeds Beckett influenced you and your career?
I vividly remember the Professional Practice module, which taught me the importance of professionalism and how it should resonate in both work and personal life. I thoroughly enjoyed the course and still recall much of the module, particularly learning about investigations and the critical role of reflection in continuous professional development in HSEQ. I have been able to transfer my knowledge of professionalism from the course to my current work.
I also found quantitative risk assessment fascinating. Although I haven’t had the opportunity to apply it since graduation, I look forward to practicing techniques like FMEA, ETA, HAZOP/HAZIP, and FTA in the future.
What advice would you give someone thinking about studying this course?
I would advise you to take your time and be certain about the career path you want to follow. Always ask questions – the lecturers are there to support you, so make the most of their time. Also, ensure you fully understand your assignments, as the modules focus on professionalism, teamwork, and continuous development.
If you're interested in research, there is a dedicated course that will be very helpful. The modules also embrace everyday work experience, regardless of the field – whether it's occupational health, risk analysis, UK H&S regulations, or ergonomics.
Seize the moment, be willing to learn, and have fun. With the knowledge you gain from this course, there is nothing you cannot achieve.
What's next for you?
I enjoy acquiring more knowledge and believe that Health and Safety is not only about ensuring people go home safely but also about protecting the company from legal complications. Over the past year, I have realised that I have a keen eye for detail, and auditing has become one of my strengths.
I am eager to gain more experience in the construction industry and see what the future holds for me. I am also open to opportunities in other industries, as I know that Health and Safety skills are transferable. I am excited about my growth and look forward to what lies ahead.
