Stories
What did you do before coming to Leeds Beckett?
I initially trained as a Biomedical Scientist in the NHS but left to complete a full-time PhD in The Development of Smart Bandage Technologies at Nottingham Trent University. After that, I joined Leeds Beckett University.
What made you choose to work in education?
I’ve always been driven by doing something of public and social value, alongside a lifelong interest in health and science (both my parents worked in the NHS, so that’s not too surprising). Curiosity and interest led me to complete a PhD, and during that time I realised how much I enjoyed working with students - explaining complex science and health in an understandable way. I felt I could make a bigger contribution through supporting the development of others and the impact education can have.
What is it like being Dean of the School of Health?
It’s great and very rewarding. It can be quite challenging at times, but no two days are the same - and that variety is important to me.
What is the most important thing about your job?
Relationships. Whatever happens - whether it’s change, challenge, success, or setbacks - making the most of it is always underpinned by strong relationships.
What do you love about Leeds and working/living here?
Friendly and modest people, and a great place to raise a family. And lots of Whippets too.
What would surprise people about you?
I used to play bass guitar in an indie/rock band in Nottingham around 2008/2009 (we even got paid to play a couple of times).
More recently, I’m a four-time British bench press champion and have represented Team GB at world and European level. I also held the British record for a short while (310kg).
What hobbies do you have?
Lifting weights, walking Willow the Whippet, tackling nearly everything sensible in DIY, and most importantly - family time with my partner and our two boys - Xander (7) and Ted (2)!
What’s your favourite song?
That’s a hard one. My music taste is quite varied, but Wonderwall by Oasis is certainly up there. My working playlist ranges from The Verve, The Stone Roses, Metallica, Faith No More and Hendrix, through to Jamie Cullum, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Kasabian, The Beatles and Elton John.
What’s your favourite film?
At the moment it’s the early Harry Potter films, as we’re watching them with our eldest son, Xander - they’ve just edged ahead of the much-watched Moana. Otherwise, anything with cars or action.
Finally, what’s your best piece of advice?
Be authentic to yourself.
