Rhona Tewnion graduated from her course in 2022. Below she shares her experience studying at Leeds Beckett University.

What area of work would you like to go into now you've graduated?

I like the idea of working in young people’s mental health. I’m also interested in sustainability and the environment, so two different things but I’d like to work in one of those areas.

What support did you receive while at university?

I got quite a lot of support while I was studying. I was diagnosed with dyslexia and dyspraxia while I was at university, so I was given a one-to-one supervisor and an adjustment plan. I had sessions every week and I found them to be helpful as we talked through my work in detail.

Why did you choose to study your course specifically at LBU?

Originally, I was on a different course and I decided to swap to social psychology as it sounded interesting. Every module’s different and you study a wide variety of topics. I developed skills and interests across a lot of different areas.

What was your favourite part of the course?

One of my modules explored music psychology and it was really fun. Everyone did presentations and brought things in, for example drums and we had a drum circle. I enjoyed the interactive parts of my course when people had the opportunity to get involved.

What advice would you give to someone thinking of studying your course?

Go with an open mind. If you approach every module as a learning opportunity, you’ll get the most out of the experience. Just enjoy it. You’ll explore different therapies and how you would transfer your knowledge into practice. A lot of my course required me to work in a group and communicate with people so my social skills have got a lot better since starting my course. The whole programme is very interactive.

What was your most joyful moment of being an LBU student?

I loved it in first year when the therapy ponies came in. It was such a fun way of understanding one small element of my course.
