How would you best describe the BA (Hons) Sociology course?
Our sociology degree course is dynamic, fit for the 21st century. Sociology is the study of society and institutions, both formal structures and informal small group interactions. To grasp the complexity of the social world we provide teaching and learning through many exciting modules that consider a whole range of different perspectives on identities, including class and gender, digital technologies, health, culture, media, protest and the complex interaction with hierarchies of power in society. We offer work-based learning and teach skills that provide students with leadership opportunities on projects to help them forge a career where what they’ve learned through their degree can be applied effectively.Who is the course aimed at?

We have a wide range of teaching and learning methods. These include lectures and seminars, field trips, and group tasks. We encourage a great deal of independent learning to equip students with the right type of knowledge and skills that will prepare them for their chosen careers. Therefore, we utilise problem-based approaches and presentations, setting reading and analytical tasks, discussion and debates to think through solutions when faced with challenges, including games-based learning. Are there opportunities to work with partners and organisations on real-world scenarios on the course?
Yes, we offer a work based learning module where students can choose from a variety of placements and even draw on their own experience of work to count towards completing the module. What career could a degree in Sociology lead to?
We have graduates who work in a wide range of careers, including teaching, the civil service, local and central government, recruitment, cyber security, retail management, marketing, youth and community work, banking and finance. This is by no means an exhaustive list, but it is illustrative when it comes to showing how relevant and applicable a sociology degree is to the jobs market.
