Tell us a bit about yourself and what you've been doing since you graduated?

Since graduating, I decided I wanted to use my English Literature degree to pursue a job in marketing. I got my first job out of university at a small company where I got made redundant after 5 months. I then continued to apply for jobs in marketing and after hard work and many interviews, I managed to get the job that I was the most interested in, and joined Emerald Publishing as a Marketing Executive in their product and services team.

What have been the highlights of your career so far?

The highlights of my career so far have been working with such a friendly, understanding and motivated team. Due to Emerald being a global company, I have gotten to meet so many amazing and diverse people that bring a different aspect of knowledge to the company, and it is fascinating to learn about their job roles. I have loved learning about publishing and how Emerald help to bring a positive change into it. I have learnt about how books, journals and case studies can create a progressive impact in the world.

Tell us about your job, what does this entail and did studying at Leeds Beckett help you get there?

My job entails bookstore management: maintaining pages, ensuring banners and copy are up to date, delivering monthly books advance information to print agents to drive sales, producing a regular journals content marketing campaign, being responsible for managing collateral translations with external agencies to support regional marketing teams, and finally, creating blog and social media campaigns. My English Literature degree from Leeds Beckett has helped me with my job requirements because at my time there, I learnt how to copywrite, write long essays and be able to sort through large amounts of information. These skills are extremely beneficial to have in many careers, especially at a publishing company.

How has your experience studying at Leeds Beckett influenced you and your career?

Whilst at Leeds Beckett, I chose a module during my English Literature course which allowed me to complete a placement. I found a placement where I was a journalist for a company in Leeds, writing about places and things to do in Leeds and it’s surrounding areas. This placement definitely helped me to get further in my career, as journalism means writing lengthy articles and blogs, and finding the correct information to put in the article/blog. These skills are important to have in marketing.

What attracted you to study your course at Leeds Beckett University?

I visited the Leeds Beckett at one of the September open days and immediately knew I wanted to attend Leeds Beckett. I had heard from others that it was a great university to go to and I simply loved my first impression of the area, the course and the course leaders.

What did you enjoy about your course and what advice would you give someone thinking about studying this course?

The English Literature course at Leeds Beckett was an extremely rewarding course. It took a lot of hard work and certainly a lot of reading and analysing, but it definitely all paid off when I saw the results of my essays and assignments. I enjoyed reading between the lines and seeing where my opinion on each text could take me, so I would definitely recommend this course if you enjoy reading and have a creative mind.

What's next for you?

Next, I would like to see how much I can further my career in marketing and writing. I’m going to continue to work for Emerald and see where my degree and career can take me.
