My secret study spots on campus

Hello! I’m Aileen, an international master’s student from Indonesia. I started my course in Public Relation and Strategic Communications at Leeds Beckett University last September 2022. I am a homebody and love the room I live in, but sadly, every time I try to study in my room, I always ended up either feeling sleepy or getting distracted. So, whenever I am pressed with time and the deadline starts to worry me, I would rather go to the campus to work on my assignments.

I wasn't sure if I should share these, after all, I don't want my favourite spots to become crowded. I decided to share them exclusively for you guys so that when you start studying at Leeds Beckett you know where to go from the start.

As the classes for my course are on City Campus, and I live closer to this campus too, all my secret study spots are all in City Campus buildings. Here we go!

The Obvious

Like its name, Leslie Silver Library is the obvious study spot for everyone. It operates 24/7 except on certain prominent public holidays. Aside from the massive collection of books, the library provides desktop computers everywhere with charger plugs on every table. It also has various types of rooms within four floors and most importantly, a designated quiet environment that will guarantee you to focus on your study with your earphone plugged into your ears to get your work done efficiently.

I only have one favourite table in the library though and you need to look for it by yourself based on the clues I give in the photo. That particular table is my first-option spot at the library because it faces a huge window with vast outdoor views that comes useful when I started to feel tired. Also, it looks incredibly beautiful on a snowy day. So… Happy hunting!

The Unknown

Located at the end of the third floor on the Rose Bowl building’s corridor, Social Learning Space is the perfect quiet room when there is no class held in it. I rarely see many people using it, unlike the one on the second floor, maybe not many people know about it. The room has a few rows of computers and a giant TV screen that you can use if you need to do any group work or presentation practice. I especially love their tall table which gives us a view of the back of the Rose Bowl. It faces Leeds Millennium Square which looks very entertaining when there is a certain festival set-up, like how it did during Christmas and Valentine’s fairs. Definitely, a nice study spot when you have a scheduled class on that day.

The Cosy

It might be only me, but the Beckett Kitchen on the Rose Bowl ground floor makes me feel like I’m sitting in a coffee shop. The cafeteria could be full around lunchtime which is probably not the best place to do a group discussion, but it tends to be quieter in the morning and evening. Like in all other places, I have my particular favourite seat as well in there. This diner-style seat that you see in the photo provides comfortable back support and of course, it also gives you an outdoor view. I think you are starting to see my favourite-spot-pattern here

The Gem

First of all, the Leeds School of Arts building is my favourite! It is gorgeously designed and smells like a nice bookstore with many super incredibly cool rooms and facilities! There is a sitting area which is very accessible for everyone. There are cute, slightly big, pink stylish chairs by the floor-to-ceiling window that you can actually see from outside of the building. I call it The Pink Pod. As you can see from the picture, it has a tiny rotatable table attached to it where you can put your laptop or notebook on it. The pod is pretty comfortable although it is slightly too high for a shortie like me. I just adore the privacy it provides through the shape and it gives you a feeling of sitting in a Silicon Valley office. Fyi, there is a floor in the Arts building which was designed collaboratively with Apple.

So, those are my top 4 “secret” study spots within the City Campus. If you are someone like me who prefer seats with a view in a quiet space, please check them out and keep “the secret” to yourself!
