Tiled background

The experience of studying abroad may be one of the best opportunities for a student. Not only does it enable you to achieve quality education, but it also gives you the chance to open yourself up to new experiences and broaden your horizon.

Although it is easy to get caught up in all the excitement and thrill of being somewhere new, it is important to remember that a lot of preparation and behind-the-scenes work are involved in your journey abroad.

To make the most out of your experience, here are some helpfu tips for you to keep in mind as you embark on your study adventure!

Make sure you do your research

Having a clear idea of what your study abroad experience would be like can improve your chances of absolutely loving it. Take the time to read up on the culture in the UK, the language if English isn't your first language, transportation system, weather, healthcare, your course, and all other information you can find.

I watched videos on YouTube and read blogs, it helps! This way, you will get a feel of what to expect and not feel lost when you arrive in the UK. If you have specific questions, feel free to talk to one of the students, it will help you a ton.

Preparation is key

Gathering all the important information and documents and arranging your accommodation, visa, and travel may seem easy peasy in theory but can actually become overwhelming if you leave it until the last minute. List down all the important documents you need to take with you, check the details of your course (e.g. start date, induction week, university resources), arrange for your visa application, book your accommodation as early as you can as they usually run out fast, and plan your flights according to your timetable. Creating a checklist is highly recommended to keep things organized and stress-free.

Pack only the essentials

Deciding what to pack and what to leave can be a struggle. Bringing all of your worldly possessions abroad isn't practical, especially with what limited space you have in your luggage. It is best to limit it to a few clothes, personal electronics, some of your favorite home snacks, medication and a first aid kit, an assortment of toiletries which won’t be available in the UK, some sentimental items, and it goes without saying, your important documents. Other than that, you can get it here when you arrive. Fortunately, a lot of stores in the UK offer student discounts with Unidays and Studentbeans so it won’t be that expensive to get new clothes or other essentials.

Visit your doctor

Generally, healthcare in the UK is free. But it is best for you to undergo a thorough medical examination and consultation with your doctor before leaving your country. You want to be the picture of health when you arrive in the UK so you can enjoy your time here. Should you have a pre-existing medical condition, don’t forget to obtain a medical clearance from your doctor as well as your medication.

Plan your budget carefully

Sticking to a budget can be difficult but overspending is not ideal as well. Leeds is one of the affordable cities in the UK and as a student, you can take advantage of the discounts in most stores or restaurants. If you want to save even more money, you can make your own meals or grab meal deals in grocery stores or use public transportation when you want to get around instead of taking an uber or taxi.

Get to know the culture and language

Make an effort to familiarise the basic phrases, practices, and etiquette in the UK before arriving. Fully immersing yourself in the English culture is one way to show your understanding respect for the locals. You don’t want to come off too touristy in a country you’ll be living in for a while. In fact, I find that locals appreciate the effort.

Get the most out of your experience

Stepping out of your comfort zone can be an overwhelming experience. You’ll have days when you’re feeling down and lonely, and days when you feel like you’re having the time of your life. Despite that, always remind yourself that this journey is an opportunity for you to grow personally and professionally. So while you focus on your studies, don’t hesitate to explore new places, meet new people and try out new things. But if things don’t go as planned and you need help of any kind, the student wellbeing team is always there for you.

That's it! seven tips from your fellow international student. Wishing you all the best and I can't wait for you to enjoy your time at Leeds Beckett University. Hopefully, I'll see you around campus.
