When the sun shines, and it gets warm in Leeds, there are lots of fun things to do in the summer. I'm an international student at Leeds Beckett. I've discovered some incredible places in Leeds and nearby where you can have a great summertime. So, let's check out some of the best stuff you can do during your summer break!

Strawberry Picking in Horsforth

Horsforth, a charming suburb of Leeds, offers a fantastic opportunity to immerse yourself in the British countryside experience. It just takes about 40 minutes from Headingley Campus to the farm called Horsforth Pick Your Own. Even on a rainy day, I headed to the farm and had a surprisingly awesome time. The taste of freshly picked strawberries is unmatched, and it's a fantastic activity to enjoy with friends or even by yourself.

Hiking in Ilkley Moor

If you like exploring scenic landscapes but prefer shorter distances, just like me, a hiking trip to Ilkley is a must-do during the summer. Located merely a 30-minute train ride from Leeds or a convenient 1-hour bus journey, Ilkley unfolds its enchanting trails, guiding you through rolling hills, captivating moorlands, and charming wooded areas. Remember to pack a picnic to enjoy at the summit and capture memorable photographs.

Picnic in Roundhay Park

When it comes to picnics, you are also in for a treat at Roundhay Park. It's like the ultimate picnic spot in Leeds with a beautiful grass field. They've got a coffee shop too, where you can relax with a drink and enjoy the lovely view of the lake. Roundhay Park is suitable for slowing down, having delicious food, sharing laughs, and spending quality time with friends and family.

Sunbathing at Leeds Dock

Leeds Dock is a trendy waterfront area offering a perfect setting to soak up the sun during summer. I often go there with bubble tea or coffee to enjoy the sun and chat with friends. The dock is surrounded by cafes and restaurants, making it an ideal spot for lunch, or grabbing a refreshing drink.

Going to the beach

I'm also always up for some sandy fun and the sound of waves, so I love to come to the beach. You can check out Scarborough Beach, Bridlington Beach or Filey for a fantastic day by the sea. Build sandcastles, dip your toes in the water, and soak up that seaside vibe without venturing too far from Leeds. It's like a mini-1-day vacation.

Rowing the boat in Knaresborough

Finally, I had an unforgettable trip to Knaresborough, and it was so easy to get there – just a quick 40-minute train ride from Leeds. With the sun painting the water a golden hue, my friends and I eagerly took hold of the oars and set off leisurely glide along the river's peaceful waters. The boat was big enough for up to six people, no matter their age, and it quickly became a hub of laughter and shared moments. If you were looking for guidance, there was even a rowing service to help you and ensure everyone could join the fun. I'm already looking forward to my next visit because there's something truly special about being in control of the boat and relaxing on that gorgeous river.

As you embark on your journey through the Leeds summer, you may immerse yourself in the same spirit of exploration, joy, and connection. Whether you savour the sweetness of freshly picked strawberries, conquer new heights with a hike, bask in the park's serenity, or enjoy the sun by the water places, I hope your summer becomes a canvas painted with vibrant moments and cherished memories.
