Making friends at uni as an introvert
Hi my name is Mansi and I'm going to share my experience of making friends at university as an introvert and hopefully my experience can help you too!
We feel shy around people we don't know. We are scared to share our feelings with someone. You can call us introverts. Hiding ourselves from the world. You can call us introverts. Escaping from the crowd.
A new adventure
Starting university is a whole new adventure which can be both exciting and nerve-wracking, especially for introverts like us. But fear not! Being an introvert is a unique quality that can be a strength in making meaningful friendships. As we embark on this new adventure, let's explore some simple strategies to step out of our comfort zone and create lasting connections during our time at university.
Attending events
First, make sure to attend Orientation and Welcome Events. Attending welcome events alone may feel scary, but remember, everyone is in the same boat – eager to make friends too! Take a deep breath, push yourself a little, and go to events organised by your university or accommodation. Engage in conversations, share your interests, and be open to meeting new people.
Participating in welcome events introduces you to various societies and volunteering opportunities within the university. This can be a fantastic way to explore your interests and connect with like-minded people who share your hobbies can lead to effortless connections. For instance, I decided to join the games society, where we all gather every Thursday evening to indulge in board games. This was an exciting experience that allowed me to bond with people who shared my enthusiasm.
Volunteering
Additionally, I took up a role as a marketing assistant at 'Eco Soup', a local sustainable shop. This experience was not only rewarding but also opened doors to making some of the best friends I could ever ask for. At first, I was nervous about working with new people, but the warm and supportive atmosphere at Eco Soup made me feel right at home. This experience not only enriched my understanding of sustainable practices but also helped me forge strong friendships with people from many different backgrounds.
My time at Eco Soup was not just about volunteering; it was a learning journey too. I got to witness first-hand how a shop operates, the effort put into keeping everything in check, and the importance of sustainability in our lives.
Other ways to get involved
Further the events organised by LBSU (Leeds Beckett Student Union) and the Global Village further enriched my university experience. The welcome party was an excellent way to break the ice and meet new people. Games nights brought out my competitive side in a fun and enjoyable way. Study group and the trips organised by the university allowed me to explore new places and create cherished memories with friends.
Beyond this, LBU provided ample opportunities to participate in various events. Organising an event was a new experience for me, but with the support of my newfound friends, it became a memorable success. The sense of accomplishment from contributing to such an event was indescribable, and it boosted my confidence significantly.
Final notes
So as we step into this transformative journey, let's do so with open hearts and embrace our introverted nature. Your time at university might seem short but it's filled with opportunities to transform, create memories, and uncover new dimensions of ourselves. Don't waste time on unnecessary worries; instead, channel your energy into making the most of your university experience and grabbing onto every opportunity that comes your way.
Your journey here is a canvas – paint it with friendships, growth, and beautiful memories.
