How to make the most of Leeds Beckett study spaces
Hey, my name is Zoe! I am a second-year Media Communications Cultures student at Leeds Beckett. I’m here to tell you the benefits of using the study spaces available when you start in September!
1. Explore different study environments
It’s SO important to explore all your study options before settling on your favourite spot! Different environments can cater to your various needs.
Consider the Sheila Silver Library and the Headingley Library, for instance. I found these places incredibly useful for focusing on my work and projects, especially the Silent Study rooms. They’re perfect if you need a distraction-free zone.
But if you prefer group studying, Beckett Kitchen in the Rose Bowl on City Campus is ideal. It has a coffee shop vibe that I love—great for working while hanging out with friends in The Cosy. I appreciate having multiple study spaces that fit my different moods.
Check them all out and find what works best for you!
2. Plan ahead and book study rooms
During exam season, study spaces and rooms fill up quickly. Planning ahead and booking them early is crucial if you want to make the most of these spots. It’s super easy to book a room online, and you can choose exactly how long you'll need the space.
From my experience, booking a few weeks in advance was a game-changer. It ensured I had a quiet, dedicated spot to focus, and saved me from the frustration of scrambling for a space at the last minute. Plus, having your study environment sorted out ahead of time means you can approach your study sessions with a clearer mind and greater confidence. Trust me, it’s worth the extra planning!
3. Utilise study resources and technology
Another great thing about Leeds Beckett University is the access to resources and technology. You have unlimited use of computers and IT labs, along with printing facilities and online tools like the Beckett Library system. Everything is free, which really makes studying and research a lot easier.
I remember one time I had a big assignment due and needed to do a lot of research quickly. The IT labs were a lifesaver—I could access the software I needed and print everything without any hassle. Plus, the Beckett Library system made it easy to find and download the academic articles I required. Having these resources at my disposal really helped me stay on track and made the whole process a lot smoother.
4. Take advantage of group study areas
I find studying with friends and course mates incredibly motivating when tackling assignments, and luckily LBU offers plenty of study areas to make this easier. The university has spaces specifically designed for teamwork and collaboration, like the social space in the Leeds School of Arts building on the ground floor. I love sitting in the booths with my friends to work on projects because it helps us brainstorm and stay engaged. Some tables even seat up to 8 people, which is perfect for larger group tasks because it allows everyone to contribute and stay organised. These spaces are designed for collaboration, making group work more effective and enjoyable.
5. Create a study routine
At university, maintaining and sticking to a routine is so important. With consistent assignments and multiple modules each term, staying on top of your work is key. This approach not only gives you time to consult your lecturers if you’re having trouble but also allows you to enjoy yourself without the stress of looming deadlines.
In my first year, I found reviewing my notes after each lecture and workshop helpful. It reinforced my understanding and made preparing for assignments much easier. I made sure that I set aside two evenings a week specifically for study when assignments became more frequent. I didn’t stick too rigidly to one location — sometimes I worked at my desk where I lived, and other times I used the library’s silent study areas. This flexible routine was essential in helping me stay on track and meet my deadlines.
So, there we have it! My top tips for making the most of the LBU study spaces available when you join the university. I hope you found my advice useful and take it into account when working out your study routine.
