Why Leeds Beckett was the right choice: An international graduates perspective
After going through a challenging phase in India, I found myself searching for a university that could not only provide me with a solid education but also help me express myself and grow in ways I had not imagined. That’s when I came across Leeds Beckett University, and I soon realised that joining this institution would be the key to unlocking my potential. From the diverse and welcoming student body to the supportive staff and impressive architecture, Leeds Beckett University stands out as a unique place to study, particularly for international students like myself. My name is Cheryl and I'm going to talk about my experience at Leeds Beckett as an international student.
Support Systems That Ease the Transition
As an international student, integrating into a new academic system can feel daunting. The cultural and educational differences between my home country and the UK left me unsure about how I would manage. Would I be able to make friends? How would I navigate the unfamiliar academic environment? Would I find the support I needed when things got tough?
All these concerns began to fade the moment I arrived in the UK. Leeds Beckett University’s commitment to ensuring a smooth transition for international students was evident right from the start.
The university’s Global Ambassadors Program became a lifeline. These ambassadors, often fellow international students or alumni, offer invaluable guidance on everything from academic challenges to settling into daily life in Leeds. When I arrived at the airport, the ambassadors were there to welcome me, making my initial experience in a new country much less intimidating. They provided answers to the countless questions I had and made sure I didn’t feel lost or alone.
From helping me navigate the city to familiarising me with the university’s amenities, the Global Ambassadors quickly proved that they are an integral part of the Leeds Beckett experience. Their presence ensures that students can always find a helping hand, whether it’s for academic advice or adjusting to life in the UK.
Academic Excellence and Practical Learning
Leeds Beckett University’s emphasis on practical learning has been another crucial factor in my positive experience. The university recognizes that education is not just about lectures and exams; it’s about preparing students for the real world. Throughout my course, the faculty have been incredibly supportive, always encouraging us to engage in discussions and apply theoretical knowledge to real-world scenarios.
The seminars and workshops integrated into the curriculum were particularly impactful. Each session provided a platform to explore concepts hands-on, giving us a taste of the challenges and opportunities we will encounter in our future careers. These experiences have not only made the academic journey enjoyable but also helped in building confidence and critical thinking skills. Every class felt worthwhile, as the learning environment at Leeds Beckett is non-judgmental, allowing students to express their ideas freely.
I will soon be graduating in November 2024, and I feel well-prepared for the workforce, both in the UK and globally.
The university’s focus on practical knowledge and the opportunities it provides for students to apply their learning in professional contexts has given me the tools I need to face any challenge in the work world.
A sense of community and belonging
One of the most remarkable aspects of my experience at Leeds Beckett has been the sense of community. As an international student, it’s easy to feel like an outsider, especially when you’re far from home. However, from the very beginning, Leeds Beckett made me feel like I belonged. Whether it was through the university’s various clubs, societies, or simply the friendly atmosphere on campus, I never felt isolated.
The staff and students are genuinely welcoming, and there’s a strong sense of inclusivity throughout the university. This sense of belonging has had a profound impact on my overall experience, making Leeds Beckett a home away from home.
I always felt that I had access to the same opportunities, resources, and support as any other student, and that inclusivity has been a defining feature of my time here.
The campus atmosphere itself is a reflection of this inclusive and vibrant community. From its modern architecture to the safety and accessibility of all facilities, Leeds Beckett’s campuses are designed to ensure that students can thrive in a comfortable and supportive environment.
Most importantly, I have made friends for a lifetime at this university and most of them not from my country but all over the world. I have learned so much from each of them and their respective cultures. This aspect specifically has broadened my horizons and made me a much better person.
World class library facilities
One of the most outstanding features of Leeds Beckett University is the Sheila Silver Library. Open 24/7 during term time, this library has been a sanctuary for me throughout my course. Whether I needed a quiet place to study, access to a vast collection of academic resources, or simply a space to relax and clear my mind, the library provided it all.
For any student, particularly at the postgraduate level, the demands of academic life can be intense. But the availability of a well-maintained, peaceful library like the Sheila Silver Library has made a significant difference in my ability to focus and succeed. The library offers more than just books; its extensive digital resources, research assistance, and study areas are all designed to support students in their academic journeys. I often found myself retreating to the library when I needed some peace and quiet to concentrate, and it became a space where I could disconnect from distractions and fully immerse myself in my studies.
Not only is it a place to study, but the library also became a haven for when my mind needed a break. In a fast-paced academic environment, it is essential to have a space where one can retreat, and Leeds Beckett’s library is a perfect example of this.

Leeds Beckett University has provided more than just an education; it has prepared me for life beyond graduation. The careers services and workshops have been instrumental in guiding students toward their professional paths, offering support in everything from CV writing to interview techniques. The university’s strong links with industries have also given us opportunities to attend job fairs, network with professionals, and gain practical work experience through internships and placements.
As I look forward to graduating soon, I am confident that the skills and knowledge I have gained at Leeds Beckett will be valuable assets in my career. The university has not only helped me grow academically but also personally, equipping me with the confidence and abilities I need to navigate the professional world.
