Make the most of your summer and prepare for university

Hi there, and welcome to Leeds Beckett!

As a third-year student here, I still remember how it felt to prepare for university - a mix of excitement about starting a new chapter, but also a little sadness about leaving home. I remember having a thousand questions in my mind and wishing I had someone to guide me through it all. This is why I decided to create this guide: to help make your transition to university life a little easier.

Summer break is the perfect time to prepare for university. I’ve created a checklist for you to help guide you with everything you need to do/know.

1. Sort Your Accommodation Early

Securing a place to live is one of the most important things you should tick off your list. Our university offers a variety of accommodation to choose from in locations around both City and Headingley campuses. You can check out these options here.

Or, you can choose to live in private accommodation. If you are considering private, you can check Unipol Student Homes as it’s a trusted platform that lists accredited rentals specifically for students.

Tip: Try to secure your accommodation before August as many accommodation options become full or raise their prices after that.

2. Prepare Your Documents and Visa

No one likes last-minute panic at the airport or visa delays, so get ahead by organising your documents early.

  • Make sure your passport is valid for the entire duration of your stay in the UK.
  • Confirm your CAS from Leeds Beckett.
  • Apply for your visa as soon as you receive your CAS. Don’t delay it as it will take some time to arrive.
  • Review all document requirements for travel and university enrolment.

Tip: Keep both digital and printed copies of all your important documents e.g. passport, CAS, visa, and accommodation confirmation in a safe folder.

3. Learn About Leeds and the UK

Moving to a new country is a big step. Take time this summer to explore what life in Leeds and the UK is like so you feel more confident when you arrive. You can do that by:

  • Researching the city, transport options, and weather. Keep in mind that British weather is unpredictable!
  • Familiarising yourself with British culture, norms, and slang. Small things like queueing and saying “cheers” (thank you) can go a long way.

Tip: Watch vlogs and Q&A videos by international students on the Leeds Beckett YouTube channel. You’ll learn what to expect and feel more connected before you even land.

4. Budget and Plan Your Finances

One of the smartest things you can do before university is to get a handle on your budget. Living in a new country can bring unexpected expenses, so plan ahead.

  • Estimate your monthly costs, including rent, groceries, travel, and social activities. For guidance, check Leeds Beckett’s website for cost estimation and breakdown.
  • Use a simple budgeting tool or spreadsheet to track income vs. expenses. Revolut and Monzo online banks both have these features in their apps.
  • Set up a UK bank account or explore international accounts that allow you to transfer and spend money easily. I recommend opening an online account like Revolut as soon as you arrive as this will make spending and managing your finances much easier, especially for the first few days until you receive your physical bank card.

Tip: Bring around £100–200 in cash for emergencies and first-day expenses, especially if your card doesn’t work immediately upon arrival. However, many places in the UK (including the on-campus cafes) are cash-free, so I highly recommend opening an online bank account like Monzo or Revolut before you arrive.

5. Improve Your English (If Needed)

Even if your English is good, brushing up can make a big difference in your confidence. Especially when it comes to academic writing and everyday conversations.

  • You can practice by watching British shows, movies, or YouTube channels - the accents might take some getting used to! Lately, I’ve been enjoying ClickForTaz, a British YouTuber who shares glimpses of her daily life in a way that feels genuine and down-to-earth.
  • Focus on listening and speaking exercises to improve fluency and comprehension.
  • Leeds Beckett provides excellent English language support, so get familiar with what’s available and take advantage early

Tip: Don’t hesitate to ask for help if you need it. Lecturers and staff are supportive and are used to helping international students adjust.

6. Start Packing Thoughtfully

It’s tempting to pack everything you own, but less is more, especially when you’re flying in.

  • Create a detailed packing checklist. Essentials include plug adaptors (UK uses Type G plugs), a warm coat, and waterproof shoes.
  • Bring a few comfort items from home like photos or snacks to ease homesickness.
  • Leave bulky items like kitchenware and bedding, you can easily buy these in Leeds at stores like Primark, Home Bargains, Poundland, or IKEA.

Tip: Pack travel-sized toiletries for the first few days, and wait to buy full-size products once you settle in.

7. Register for Global Arrival and Welcome Week

Leeds Beckett puts a lot of effort into welcoming international students. Don’t miss out!

  • Sign up for airport pick-up services.
  • Attend Welcome Week events. These are designed to introduce you to university systems, the city, and fellow students.
  • Orientation sessions are usually packed with info on how to use the library, register with a GP, get a student ID, and more.

Tip: The first week is one of the best times to make friends, so attend as many events as you can and don’t be afraid to start conversations. Personally, I went to the Fresher’s Fair, which was a great way to learn about the different communities at Leeds Beckett, and I got lots of freebies too!

8. Connect With Other Students

Starting university is a lot easier when you already know a few friendly faces.

  • Use platforms like Unibuddy Community to connect with other students and start conversations. You’ll receive an invitation to join the community once you’ve received an offer.
  • Ask questions about packing, courses, or city life -  returning students are usually happy to help.

Tip: Don’t worry if you feel shy, everyone is in the same boat, and most students are just as eager to make new friends.

Preparing for university is a mix of excitement and nerves, and that’s totally normal! The summer before you begin is your time to set yourself up for a great experience. With the right preparation, you’ll arrive feeling more confident, organized, and ready to embrace everything Leeds Beckett University and the city of Leeds have to offer.

So, start ticking off your checklist, join those student groups, and keep looking forward. You’ve got this!
