Tiled background

Let’s be honest - Results Day is overwhelming, whether you get the grades you hoped for or not. Clearing is your chance to make the most of university no matter what happens, so why not be ready? Here are my top 10 questions to ask when you call a Clearing team!

1. Are spaces still available on the course I’d like to study?

Remember, there’s no need to be in a sweaty panic, but it’s important to keep in mind that many other students are in similar positions as you. Since course spots can be limited and fill up quickly, it’s a good idea to check early and make sure there’s availability in your preferred course. Doing so will help you avoid any unnecessary delays or last-minute stress, ensuring you stay on track with your plans.

This is where the Leeds Beckett Clearing Priority Pass could be of use to you!

2. If not, which similar courses are there spaces on?

Speaking from personal experience, the course you think you want now might not be the one you’ll feel passionate about by the time you finish college. It’s important to stay open-minded and be willing to take a step back from the path you initially expected to follow. Each university offers its own unique approach and specialisations, so don’t hesitate to ask about courses that align with your interests and goals. Exploring different options can help you discover new opportunities you hadn’t considered before and guide you toward the best fit for you in the long run.

3. What sort of modules does this course tend to offer?

A course title alone doesn’t always give you the full picture of what you’ll be studying. Taking the time to explore the modules available within a course can make a big difference in deciding if a university is the right fit for you. Often, you’ll have the chance to choose which modules interest you most, allowing you to tailor your studies to your passions. Speaking from my own experience, I was officially enrolled in English Literature, but during my second year, I had the opportunity to learn about screenwriting and even work for a magazine -  experiences I never expected but found incredibly rewarding.

4. What career paths can this course create?

It’s completely normal not to have a clear idea of what you want to do after university and honestly, it’s not something you have to have figured out right away. However, it can be really helpful to understand the range of options your degree might open up for you. Being aware of these possibilities early on can give you a head start in planning and exploring opportunities, even if you’re still figuring things out as you go.

5. What is the grading and examination process on this course?

Different courses have different ways of being assessed - some rely heavily on exams, others focus on coursework, and some use a combination of assignments throughout the year. If you find exam periods particularly stressful or challenging, it’s definitely worth considering this when choosing your course. Regardless of the assessment style, Leeds Beckett will provide you with the support and preparation you need to succeed. Still, having a clear understanding of how your course is marked can help you make a more informed decision and feel more confident about what to expect.

6. Are there any common transport routes for students living away from campus?

You’re not expected to have your accommodation sorted before you’ve even decided where you’ll be studying, but it’s a good idea to check how well the university is connected to the city. Some people enjoy a daily commute, while others prefer the convenience and community of living on campus. If you’ll be living away from home, you’ll probably spend a lot of time exploring your new environment, so it’s helpful to familiarise yourself with the best routes, transport options, and local spots early on. Getting to know your surroundings can make settling in much easier and more enjoyable.

7. Is there any support available to me, and who should I speak to regarding this?

Whether you need financial advice, academic guidance, or emotional support, Leeds Beckett has dedicated teams ready to help students throughout their journey. The Clearing process, even after you’ve decided where you’ll be going, can still feel quite overwhelming, especially given the short turnaround time over the summer months. If support services are available, don’t hesitate to use them - they’re there to make things easier for you and help you navigate any challenges along the way.

8. What sort of communities are available to me, and how do I access them?

Communities and clubs are a fantastic way to meet new people and make friends at university. With such a wide variety available, it’s nearly impossible to explore them all in just one conversation, but if you have a particular hobby or interest, it’s definitely worth asking whether there’s a group for it. Getting involved in these communities can also be a great way to ease first-term nerves and jump right into university life, helping you feel more connected and settled from the start.

9. Is there an open day/introduction day I can visit once I’ve made my decision?

You’ve probably already been to a few traditional Open Days, maybe even traveled up and down the country checking out different universities. But once you’ve secured your place, the experience of visiting campus can feel completely different. There’s something exciting and real about walking around knowing it’s actually going to be your new home. That’s why it’s worth finding out when you might be able to visit again and start getting familiar with your surroundings. Leeds Beckett hosts special Clearing Open Days and campus tours specifically for students who’ve secured a place and want the chance to come and explore the campus before starting. It’s a great way to ease into the next chapter and feel more prepared for what’s ahead.

10. Can I get a Clearing offer from more than one university?

Yes, you can receive Clearing offers from more than one university but you can only accept one. During Clearing, you’re free to contact multiple universities, discuss your options, and even receive informal offers over the phone or via email. However, when it comes to officially accepting an offer, you’ll need to add your chosen university as your Clearing choice on UCAS. Once you do that, and the university confirms your place, it becomes your firm choice, and you won’t be able to accept any others. So while you can explore multiple offers, take your time to compare them carefully before making your final decision.

Whether your Clearing journey is something you’ve carefully planned, or it’s taken you by surprise, the key is to stay prepared and open. For me, Clearing turned out to be a life-changing experience - it led me to a course I’ve truly loved, one I didn’t even know existed at the start. So be brave, stay open-minded, and whatever path you find yourself on, make the most of the opportunities that come your way.
