Donating Leeds Beckett Bikes to Roundhay High School
Paul Weston began repairing bikes for students at Roundhay High School after noticing that two students, who lived far from school, were walking and often arriving late. Determined to help, Paul turned to Facebook, asking for donations of bike parts.
His post caught the attention of Steve Halliwell, a bike mechanic at Leeds Beckett University. Instead of just donating parts, Steve proposed a more impactful idea: refurbishing unused university bikes for the students.
Steve took on the project, identifying old or unused bikes from the university. Over time, he restored eight bikes, making them roadworthy and ready to use.
The bikes were then delivered to Paul, who has plans beyond just providing transportation. He aims to start a weekly “bike club” where students can learn bike maintenance and road safety skills. The initiative will focus on helping those most in need, including students from disadvantaged backgrounds who might not otherwise have access to a bike.
This partnership highlights the power of community collaboration, supporting students' education and wellbeing while giving unused bikes a second life instead of letting them go to waste.
