Indicative Module Content

Routes of transmission of infection methods of control, patients’ risks assessment and management.
Management of infection prevention and control, and areas of responsibility.
Micro-organisms of clinical significance, factors affecting host susceptibility to infection, endogenous and exogenous infection.
Risk management and patient safety; hospital hygiene. 
Responsibility of the individual practitioner and nursing manager.
Clinical waste disposal, decontamination of equipment, sharps disposal and collection and handling of specimens.
Nurse accountability in IPC, impact of infection on patient and organisation, application of legislation, clinical governance, clinical audit and evidence based practice.
Local and national surveillance.
Outbreak investigation and root cause analysis.

Learning activities


Students are expected to attend all key lectures and contribute meaningfully to group work, case studies and worked examples. They are also expected to support their learning by engaging in the activities, additional reading and support materials on the VLE and to utilise on line library resources to support their information literacy skills development.

Students are also expected to reflect on the theoretical issues and concepts explored, and use their experiences in practice to inform the discussions and debate in the taught component.
