Advanced Clinical Decision Making: Nurse-led Recognition and Response in Children

This module aims to introduce registered nurses / AHP’s / Paramedics to the concepts and theory of advanced clinical decision making working within the parameters of a nurse-led pathway. It will enable the practitioner to undertake comprehensive clinical assessments and respond appropriately when an infant or child meets the criteria or deviates from a specified pathway. It will enable the practitioner to identify treatment / investigations to manage safety, and offers the opportunity to transform care delivery by improving patient experience in the discharge process.

Learning outcomes:

  • Undertake a comprehensive assessment of body systems in children following the use of a risk stratification process
  • Critically analyse advanced clinical decision making theory and demonstrate in depth clinical reasoning when undertaking appropriate intervention as part of a nurse-led pathway.
  • Demonstrate a critical awareness of the concepts of clinical governance, risk management, ethics, law and professional issues by critically evaluating a proposal for a nurse-led pathway within the clinical area

  • Advanced clinical decision making concept and theory
  • Practical skills development in history taking
  • Comprehensive assessment of body systems respiratory, cardiovascular, neurological and abdominal assessments while identifying red flags within these systems
  • Concepts and theory within the risk stratification process, a technique for systematically categorising patients based on their health status and other factors
  • PGDs/vaccination schedules and the use of strategies to introduce nurse-led initiation of medication schedules.
  • Safety-netting advice and its role in patient safety and the discharge process
  • Service improvement models and concepts
  • Quality improvement initiative
