This module will provide an opportunity to critically examine current and future policy issues relating to health and health promotion, and equip students with the skills to operate in a policy environment. It will draw on contemporary, real-life policy contexts and debates.
On successful completion of the module, you will be able to:
- Identify and critically analyse current and future challenges and opportunities for the promotion of health
- Evaluate the ways in which politics and policy impact on health at local, national and international levels
- Critically appraise examples of practical interventions intended to produce healthy public policy and the justification for political action, and;
- Draw on critical analyses from the social sciences to explore both influences on, and the social impact of, health promotion.

Policies for Health in the 21st Century is aimed at professionals working in related allied-health professions fields as well as, for example, nursing, nutrition, policy, environmental health, and social work.
The module is delivered twice a year over 12 weeks. Once in Semester 1 (September to January) both in person and online via distance learning and once in Semester 2 (January to June) online via distance learning.
Assessment is by an individual 3500-word policy proposal.
The cost for this module is £1,000.
