This module provides healthcare practitioners with the knowledge and skills to appraise complex problems as they present within contemporary health and care services. Students will use higher levels of autonomy to learn how to advocate for social justice, applying knowledge, skills, and behaviours to address the widening health inequalities in our society. Students will be able to analyse community assets and evaluate place-based approaches to support the positive health and wellbeing of people across the diverse communities and populations they serve.

Module Aims

This module aims to appraise the complexity of population health and the disparities that are experienced by individuals, families and communities. Students will gain a deep understanding of health inequality as a social justice issue within the contemporary health and care setting. Public health strategies that aim to tackle the socio-economic and commercial determinants of health will be explored. Students will critically analyse community assets and evaluate place-based approaches to improve and support the positive health and wellbeing of people, communities and populations.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this module students will be able to:

  • Utilise theories and principles of public health and nursing practice to influence and lead improvements in the health of people, communities and populations
  • Explore social, economic, demographic and epidemiological data to analyse and evaluate community and population health needs
  • Analyse the social and commercial determinants of health to develop a critical understanding of health inequality
  • Use models, evidence and concepts to explore and evaluate population level interventions that address public health issues
  • Identify and critically review professional and policy drivers for public health practice
