Tiled background

The School of Built Environment, Engineering and Computing were delighted to recently welcome Covéa Insurance to Leeds Beckett, to give students and those with an interest in data science the opportunity to learn more about how it is being applied, take part in a workshop and benefit from careers support.

Covéa Insurance have a multi-award-winning Data Science team and their goal is to support their entire business through the adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML). With a vast array of data at their disposal, they are building products that make a real difference to their customers.

The students heard from Covéa Insurance about their business and how they are using data science in an effective manner. As an insurance company, identifying fraudulent activity is important. Since introducing AI and ML they have saved the company millions – developing a bespoke and innovative approach to identifying key signs of fraud has contributed to this.

The students worked in small teams with the team from Covéa to solve a real-life business problem, with their designed solutions coming in the form of ‘hypotheses’. To reach this conclusion, the students needed to consider aspects of the problem such as what data was required and how they would ensure the solution is understandable (by using explainable AI).

Lastly, students were offered the opportunity to have a 1:1 careers appointment where they could receive tailored advice on careers in data science, insurance, and financial services – to name a few. The team also shared tips on how to make their CV stand out, how to nail an important interview and how to find their own future roles.

Data Science Course Director, Jackie Campbell, commented “As roles in data science are only on the increase, we are thrilled to support our students in this way with their understanding of the role, the job market and applications to their studies. A huge thank you to Ashley from Covéa and the Beckett Careers team for offering this opportunity.”
