The Building Services Engineer degree apprenticeship programme at Leeds Beckett University has been designed for Building Services Engineering companies wishing to enhance their employees’ career progression towards Incorporated and eventual Chartered Engineer status. It is also suitable for those choosing to pursue a career in Building Services Engineering (BSE) or allied industries via an apprenticeship programme.

This apprenticeship compliments and provides a degree route for those enrolled on BTEC L3 Diploma/Advanced Apprenticeships, HNC/HND L4 Apprenticeships in Building Services Engineering or cognate programmes externally. One caveat to this statement is that RPEL or credit transfer entry to the BEng (Hons) DA course is permissible to level 4 and 5 only. Direct entry to level 6 is therefore not possible.

Essential information

The courses will take up to five years to complete, depending on previous qualifications and the course chosen. The apprenticeships comprise on-the-job practical training with academic learning. This approach combines face-to-face teaching, laboratory workshops, reflective practice and formal assessment.

The experiential learning element of the courses focuses on the apprentice’s workplace and specific areas of project work they are undertaking with regard to meeting key attributes required of a professionally recognised Building Services Engineer. Apprentices will work towards the end point assessment for this Degree Apprenticeship, which will provide Incorporated Engineer (IEng) status with the Chartered Institute of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE) via professional review. Employers also engage with professional development to help the apprentice's progress through their training.

Apprentices will be required to attend the university on a day release basis.

Applicants will normally have 104 UCAS points. Given the technical nature of the programme, applicants should be able to demonstrate capability to ‘A’ level standard (level 3) at grade B or better in a Mathematically related subject and one science subject.

GCSE English Language Grade 4 or above (Grade C for GCSEs taken before 2017) or equivalent. Key Skills Level 2, Functional Skills Level 2 and the Certificate in Adult Literacy are accepted in place of GCSEs.

If the apprentice candidate is making an application to join the programme at level 5 then the entry requirements would be a suitable level 4 or 5 qualification (e.g., HNC, HND or FdSc) in an appropriate cognate area such as Building Services Engineering, Electrical/Electronics, Mechanical or Environmental Engineering.

Please note applications are submitted through the relevant employer, not directly from applicants.

Before starting an apprenticeship, applicants will be required to sign a “Training Plan” which details key information regarding the apprenticeship such as learning requirements, responsibilities of the apprentice, employer and university, assessments, delivery schedule, etc, some of which are detailed below. Further information on this, and general apprentice admissions requirements, may be sought from the Apprenticeships Team:
