Essential information

At least a second-class honours degree in the cognate subject of Health.

Please note that English and maths entry criteria have been waived for this programme.

Applicants must have Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC) first level registration Adult Health and be able to demonstrate through your personal statement that you have consolidated pre-registration nursing outcomes and gained deeper understanding in relevant professional practice.

Evidence of support from an appropriate work based medical facilitator for support in developing the District Nurse competencies.

Applicants will need to satisfy the requirements for access to the Non-Medical Prescribing module as stipulated by the NMC.

Apprentices are in full time employment whilst studying for the two-year PGDip apprenticeship. They practice their newly acquired knowledge and skills within the workplace for the benefit of patients, service users and colleagues.

The postgraduate course includes a variety of practice experiences and assessments, combined with academic studies designed to complement and to underpin the apprentices’ experiential learning. This approach is designed alongside a combination of face-to-face university teaching supported by online learning. Professional development sessions supported by an ePortfolio workbook facilitate practitioners to map their practice to District Nursing standards.

Apprentices are assessed via a range of methods. Examples may include practical skills assessments, presentations, essays, reflections, reports, e-portfolios, OSCE/case history examinations, and change management reports. The apprenticeship also includes an integrated End Point Assessment.

Please note applications are submitted through the relevant employer, not directly from applicants.

Before starting an apprenticeship, applicants will be required to sign a “Commitment Statement” which details key information regarding the apprenticeship such as learning requirements, responsibilities of the apprentice, employer and university, assessments, delivery schedule, etc, some of which are detailed below. Further information on this, and general apprentice admissions requirements, may be sought from the Apprenticeships Team:

Information for employers

Employer benefits

  • Meet the unique needs of your organisation with degree apprentices learning while they work. This enables them to develop the knowledge and professional competencies required by the Nursing and Midwifery Council while mastering the specialist knowledge needed to deliver high quality care in your workplace
  • Develop your existing staff by allowing them to undertake a Degree Apprenticeship or enabling them to work with a Degree Apprentice in the workforce, through mentoring opportunities and more
  • Attract new talent to your organisation
  • Improve staff retention by offering a clear and structured career progression to valued support staff
  • Maximise use of the apprenticeship levy

Employer requirements

  • Every apprenticeship must have an Apprenticeship Agreement. This is a contract of service between the apprentice and the employer, confirming the apprenticeship and the standard being undertaken. This will be supplemented by a ‘Statement of Commitment’ signed by the employer, provider, and apprentice, setting out the expectations, roles and responsibility of each party involved in the apprenticeship
  • The apprentice must be already employed or specifically offered a position associated with the apprenticeship opportunity. In this case the employer will be responsible for the recruitment of Degree Apprentices. However, we can work with you to promote your opportunities via our website
  • The employer pays Degree Apprentices at their normal rate whilst they are studying. Apprentices must be paid at least a minimum wage appropriate to their age and job role
  • Apprentices require a mentor in the workplace who will oversee their learning and coordinate with the university
  • Apprentices spend a minimum of 20% of their working hours completing study for the course

Funding

Organisations with a wage bill in excess of £3 million can fund the course fees using their Apprenticeship Levy.

If you are a non-levy paying organisation the government will co-fund your apprenticeship training by contributing 95% of the costs and you will pay the remaining 5% of costs.

For further information on apprenticeship funding visit the Government website.
