Building on the success of our highly regarded MA (Hons) Social Work degree, our Postgraduate Diploma Apprenticeship in Social Work provides both levy and non levy paying organisations with a flexible route for staff to gain the qualifications required to register and practise as social workers. The programme is approved by Social Work England, and on successful completion apprentices will receive a Postgraduate Diploma in Social Work and achieve the Level 6 Social Work Apprenticeship Standard with Level 7 credits, providing eligibility to apply for professional Social Work registration.

Apprentices remain in full time employment throughout the 22-month programme, enabling them to apply their developing knowledge and skills directly within their roles for the benefit of both the service and the individuals they support. They will learn as part of a diverse cohort, studying alongside our MA students and apprentices from a wide range of partner organisations.

Teaching is delivered on set days throughout the academic year, with the remainder of the apprentice’s time spent consolidating their learning in the workplace or completing the required 170 days of placement. As members of a Teaching Partnership with Leeds City Council, Wakefield Council’s Adults and Children’s Services, and the University of Leeds, we ensure that apprentices have access to high quality statutory placements during their studies.

What modules can I study?

Year 1:

  • Understanding Social Work: Knowledge, Values and Skills for practice.
  • Social Work with Adults
  • Social Work with Children and Young People
  • Practice Placement 1
  • Models of Intervention

Year 2:

  • Social Work Law for Qualifying Practice
  • Practice Placement 2

  • Meet the unique needs of your organisation with degree apprentices learning while they work. This enables them to develop the knowledge and professional competencies required by Social Work England while mastering the specialist knowledge needed to deliver high quality care in your workplace
  • Develop your existing staff by allowing them to undertake a Degree Apprenticeship or enabling them to work with a Degree Apprentice in the workforce, through mentoring opportunities and more
  • Attract new talent to your organisation

Employer requirements

  • Every apprenticeship must have an Apprenticeship Agreement. This is a contract of service between the apprentice and the employer, confirming the apprenticeship and the standard being undertaken. This will be supplemented by a ‘Statement of Commitment’ signed by the employer, provider, and apprentice, setting out the expectations, roles and responsibility of each party involved in the apprenticeship
  • The apprentice must be already employed or specifically offered a position associated with the apprenticeship opportunity. In this case the employer will be responsible for the recruitment of Degree Apprentices. However, we can work with you to promote your opportunities via our website
  • The employer pays Degree Apprentices at their normal rate whilst they are studying. Apprentices must be paid at least a minimum wage appropriate to their age and job role
  • Apprentices require a mentor in the workplace who will oversee their learning and coordinate with the university
  • Apprentices spend a minimum of 20% of their working hours completing study for the course

Funding

Organisations with a wage bill in excess of £3 million can fund the course fees using their Apprenticeship Levy.

If you are a non-levy paying organisation the government will co-fund your apprenticeship training by contributing 95% of the costs and you will pay the remaining 5% of costs.

For further information on apprenticeship funding visit the Government website.
