Men continue to have a lower life expectancy, engage more frequently in risky health behaviours, and show less interest in health promotion than women — a gap further widened by socioeconomic factors. This study delves into the key barriers that prevent men from taking part in community-based health promotion and explores how we can more effectively engage and motivate them to participate and stay involved.
Based on 28 in-depth interviews with men aged 18–65 across a range of everyday settings, the research uncovers a range of challenges — from issues linked to the design of health promotion offers to personal, social, and cultural factors influencing participation.
Join us to discover what truly matters to men when it comes to health promotion and how we can better design, communicate, and deliver initiatives that resonate.
This event is part of the CHPR Seminar Series. Over the 2025-2026 academic year, CHPR will be running one seminar or event each month. Some are short lunchtime sessions (online). Others are longer twilight sessions (in-person). Each seminar or event has at least one speaker, including a CHPR or other Leeds Beckett academic talking about their work, or an external guest discussing a contemporary health promotion/public health issue.
