The Art of Foley
Foley is one of the most subtle yet persuasive special effects used in film. It is an art of illusion and creativity. On Monday 19 February 2024, the INSIDE/OUT lecture programme will be joined by award winning Foley Artist Caoimhe Doyle and Foley Mixer Jean McGrath, who will reveal the tricks of their trade and talk us through the often-surprising ways sound is produced for film and television.

Sharing first-hand accounts of their work on productions such as HBO’s ‘Game of Thrones’ Lenny Abrahamson’s ‘Room’, Colm Bairéad’s ‘An Cailín Ciúin’ (The Quiet Girl) and ‘The Favourite’ directed by Yorgos Lanthimos to name but a few, Caoimhe Doyle and Jean McGrath bring with them 25 years’ experience of working within the film and television industry and from The Foley Lab, a sound studio in Wicklow, Ireland.

As part of this event, Caoimhe Doyle and Jean McGrath will give a masterclass workshop where attendees will be invited to perform Foley for a scene from a film and re-create an entire soundscape. Attendees will be guided step by step through various methods of recording and performing realistic sound effects. A screening of the finished sound design will feature at the end of the masterclass workshop.
