In this talk, Dr James Nobles will :
- Reflect on the current evidence base around obesity prevention
- Summarise the published evidence on systems approaches to obesity prevention
- Outline several avenues to strengthen such approaches – and associated research – in the future
The Obesity Institute at Leeds Beckett University brings together academics from a range of disciplines across the university with policy makers, practitioners, and people living with or at risk of obesity and their families and carers, to coproduce innovative person-centred advances in obesity locally, nationally and internationally.
Dr James Nobles is a pragmatic, mixed methods researcher within the Obesity Institute at Leeds Beckett University. His broader areas of research cover the prevention and treatment of obesity, with specific interests in the design, implementation and evaluation of systems approaches to help address non-communicable diseases.
Throughout the last 10 years, James has worked closely with local and national policy makers to ensure that research translates meaningfully back into the decision-making processes. He had a core role in the development of the Office for Health Improvement and Disparities (OHID) guidance on the Whole Systems Approach to Obesity (2019) which has now been downloaded over 10 000 times and is being used by over 80 local authorities. He then went on to work at the University of Bristol in the NIHR Applied Research Collaboration where his work explored how we can better evaluate systems approaches in the context of physical activity. James is also an honorary academic advisor for OHID in obesity prevention and management.
