Although gender dissident individuals represent a highly vulnerable social group, their inclusion in tourism and leisure studies is severely limited. Considering that socioeconomic, cultural, and legal contexts wield significant influence on inclusivity and equality for this population segment. Drawing from empirical research in the Mexican context, it exposes the challenges faced by gender dissident individuals in accessing and engaging in tourism and leisure activities.
With the aim of shedding light on future research endeavours on this topic, this seminar also delineates the challenges encountered during the research process with this social group. Carlos will propose avenues for future research to address the vulnerability of gender dissident individuals in Mexico and potentially across Latin America.
Carlos Monterrubio holds a PhD from Manchester Metropolitan University, United Kingdom. He is a researcher at the Autonomous University of the State of Mexico (Mexico). His research focuses on the sociocultural dimensions of gender, sexuality, and multispecies relationships in tourism, leisure, and events.
He has published over sixty scientific articles in indexed journals in English, Spanish, and French. He is the author of five books and has co-authored three volumes. He has been a keynote speaker and presenter at academic events in countries across America, Europe, and Asia and maintains academic and scientific collaborations with researchers from Latin America, the United States, and Europe.
