Choose a placement that challenges you: Nikhita's Graduation Story
Nikhita will graduate with a BA (Hons) in Childhood Development and Playwork. During her course she did a placement at a prison and as a result has secured a job there already.
Stories
Nikhita chose her degree and Leeds Beckett after attending an open day.
“I chose to study at Leeds Beckett University because I’ve always had a passion for working with children, but I wasn’t sure which direction I wanted to take. When I attended the university’s open day and discovered the Childhood Development and Playwork course – along with its emphasis on practical placements – I knew it was right for me.”
Nikhita loved the hands-on experience that she was able to get.
“Throughout the course, I had the opportunity to explore different aspects of working with children and families through hands-on experience. My first placement was in a nursery for children with additional needs. It was an incredibly rewarding experience, but it helped me realise that this wasn’t the area I wanted to pursue long-term.”
It was Nikhita’s second placement which proved the most profound.
“My second placement was truly life-changing. I was placed in a women’s prison, where I supported family engagement services and helped facilitate prison visits. This experience pushed me out of my comfort zone and opened my eyes to the challenges and importance of maintaining family connections for women in custody. It ultimately led to my current role.”
Today, I manage the Family Resettlement Project in the same prison. I support women in maintaining or rebuilding relationships with their children and families ahead of their release. It’s a role that is both challenging and deeply meaningful, and I credit Leeds Beckett – and especially the practical placements – for helping me find a career that I’m passionate about.”
Nikhita says she has some simple advice for students.
“My advice to students is choose a placement that challenges you. Step out of your comfort zone – it might just lead you to your future career.”
