Ron Pickering OBE was an athletics coach and BBC sports commentator and presenter. After studying for a Diploma in Physical Education at Carnegie College and a Masters degree at Leicester University, Ron was a PE teacher before becoming a professional athletics coach. Ron became National Coach for Wales in 1960 and was coach for the Great Britain team at the 1964 Olympics in Tokyo, helping Lynn Davies to a long jump gold medal. Alongside being Managing Director of Lee Valley Regional Park, Ron became an iconic sports commentator on the BBC for athletics, gymnastics and skiing, as well as the host of television shows such as We Are the Champions and Superstars. Ron was awarded an OBE for services to athletics in 1986.
