Leeds Beckett graduate hits the slopes for World Championship
The finals are set to be broadcast on Eurosport 2 live at 5pm tonight (Thursday 22 January).
With only four competitors being selected per nation by their national governing bodies, the World Championships, held every two years, are the highest level of competition for skiers.
The 24-year-old from Sheffield graduated in Sports Performance in 2013 and has been training for the Championships in America at Copper Mountain in Colorado since the end of November.
This year’s World Halfpipe Championships take place in Kreischberg, Austria, on the 19 – 24 January, with the qualification having taken place on 21 January and the top ten skiers, including James, competing in the finals on 22 January.
James explained: “The competition format is two runs - best run counts, and it is scored out of 100 points. The halfpipe walls are 22ft high, and approximately 600ft in length (Olympic specifications). It is judged across five categories including execution, difficulty, amplitude, variety, and progression of new tricks.”
After the World Championships, James will fly straight back to America on 26 January to prepare for the next World Cup at Park City, USA, on 24 February.
James added: “As the 2018 Winter Olympics get closer, I'm on the lookout for new sponsors to help contribute towards travel to the World Cup events and to improve on my World ranking so I qualify for the Olympics. Potential sponsors can contact me at jamesmachon@hotmail.com. Thank you to my current sponsors for their support Volkl skis, Dare2b clothing & Wosskow Brown Solicitors.”
James represented Team GB in the 2014 Olympics and has won five consecutive British Halfpipe Championships. He is currently ranked in the top 15 by the Association of Freeskiing Professionals. He and his brother Robert, aged 22, have been competitive skiers and part of the GB Park & Pipe Team since the ages of 13 and 15.
