Cricket legend to bowl over crowds at Leeds Beckett public talk
Jason ‘Dizzy’ Gillespie, former fast bowler for the all-conquering Australian cricket team, will be discussing the special rivalry that exists between Australia and England and also reflecting on his success at YCCC. The event forms part of the University’s Carnegie Conversations guest speaker series.
The talk, which is free, open to the public and sponsored by FrontRow Legal, will take place on Thursday 4 February at James Graham, Headingley Campus.
Speaking about the guest lecture, Dr John Minten, Pro Vice Chancellor and Dean of the Carnegie Faculty at Leeds Beckett, said: “We are very excited to welcome Jason to our series of events. As a bowler he was impressive; ranking sixth highest wicket-taker in Test cricket. He wasn’t a bad batsman either, scoring a double century as night-watchman against Bangladesh in his final Test.
“Since taking over as first-team Coach in 2011, his success as a leader is apparent. He steered the White Rose to promotion in his first season, securing a second-place finish in the top tier of the Championship in 2013, then going one better in 2014 and 2015 to achieve two successive County Championship titles.
“I am sure that Jason will make as big an impression on the people of Leeds and wider region who come to the event as he has on Yorkshire cricket.”
In addition to his role as first team coach of YCCC, Sydney-born Jason will return home to Adelaide in the winters of 2015/16 and 2016/17 to take charge of the city’s T20 Big Bash team, the Strikers.
