The RTS began in 1927 following a Leeds lecture from one of the future inventors of television, John Logie Baird.
Mr Lowen said: “It’s an honour to have the chance to unveil this plaque to commemorate the creation of the society.
“After John Logie Baird demonstrated his ‘noctovision’ - what he called ‘seeing by electricity’ - to the British Association on September 7 1927, the formation of the society was proposed. Many of the founder members were from Leeds and Yorkshire.”
Mr Lowen, who is Honorary Secretary of the Royal Television Society and runs International Television and Media Consulting Ltd, added: “As someone who worked for 30 years in television in Leeds, I am proud that it all started here.”
The plaque, arranged with the Yorkshire Society, was unveiled at Leeds University’s School of Media and Communication.
