Student cricketers prepare for War of the Roses showdown
The T20 War of the Roses match will take place on Thursday 28 April featuring men’s cricket teams from Leeds Beckett University and Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU).
Speaking ahead of the fixture, event organiser and Club Development Officer at Leeds Beckett, Jo Mannion, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for the team to play in one of the world’s most famous cricket venues. The boys can’t wait to play and hope to see lots of supporters down to cheer them on throughout the day.”
Neil Hurren, Head of MMU Sport, added: “We’re grateful to Yorkshire County Cricket Club for the chance to play at one of the world’s most prestigious cricket venues. The MMU Sport outdoor cricket team have played across the North West as they moved their way through their British Universities and College Sports (BUCS) division, but this will be their first time taking to the pitch in such hallowed ground for the sport. Our players are really looking forward to a fun day out, as well as some friendly cross-border rivalry.”
Entry is free and organisers would like to encourage students, staff, alumni and the local community along to enjoy a fantastic day of cricket.
Before the War of the Roses match the Leeds MCCU women’s team will face the MCC women’s team in a T20 fixture. The Leeds MCCU team is a combined Leeds Beckett and University of Leeds side which competes in the BUCS Premier North League. The MCC team is made up of player members of the Marylebone Cricket Club who are invited to play selected fixtures. In previous years this has included England internationals Sarah Taylor and Tammy Beaumont and Beth Mooney (Australia and Yorkshire).
Speaking ahead of the match, Leeds MCCU coach Rick Holland, commented: “The MCC fixture is a chance each year for the team to experience playing and mixing with established professional players and MCC playing members. It is a much valued yearly fixture and a great showcase for women’s cricket.”
In between the two fixtures spectators will be entertained by cheerleaders from Leeds Beckett and MMU. Refreshments will also be available to purchase throughout the day. Gates will open from 11am with spectators asked to enter the ground via St Michaels Lane. For more information please contact j.mannion@leedsbeckett.ac.uk
