Varsity showdown for student American Footballers
The Leeds Celtics (University of Leeds) and Leeds Carnegie (Leeds Beckett University) will line up at Weetwood Sports Park on Sunday 24 April, with kick off at 1:00pm.
Entry is free and hot and cold food and drink is available to purchase at the game. The organisers are raising money for the charity, City Hearts, through a raffle and programme sales on the day.
Speaking about the fixture, Leeds Beckett University captain James Lewsley said: "Here at Leeds Beckett, the Varsity game is the first fixture we look for when coming into a new season, it creates a huge buzz around both teams and we can't wait for Sunday!!"
Andy Yell, team captain for Leeds Celtics, added: “Fans should expect a technically sound team, with rookies who have developed and improved. Should the Celtics find their rhythm, we may create some real surprises!”
Jason Beecham, an Events Management student at Leeds Beckett and one of the event organisers said: “Being a part of the team helping to organise the Leeds Varsity American Football match, one of the key fixtures of the Varsity series, has provided me with an excellent opportunity to manage a live event, offering invaluable experience alongside the course itself. "
Last October Leeds Beckett were crowned Leeds Varsity champions for the 11th successive as they defeated their city neighbours, the University of Leeds, in an intense day of sporting action.
More than 1,400 students from both universities took part in the annual sporting competition, competing in over 50 fixtures across one spectacular day of competition.
Leeds Beckett maintained their 100% unbeaten record and retained the trophy for the 11th year, with the day’s action culminating in a thrilling rugby union contest in front of a record crowd of 14,272 at Headingley Carnegie Stadium.
Leeds Varsity covers a host of different sports including squash, athletics, biathlon, water polo and indoor cricket, ensuring it is one of the most inclusive and diverse one-day Varsity events across the country.
