Everyone a winner at University Sports Awards
More than 700 staff and students came together on Saturday 7 May at Elland Road to bask in the glory of another year of outstanding sporting achievement. And whilst stars from track, field, court and the pool were among the big winners on the night, all individuals, teams and support staff were acknowledged for their continued effort and commitment.
Lisa McCormick, Club Development Administrator, Sport & Active Lifestyles, said: “What another incredible night. The Sports Awards is a fantastic event to organise because it gives something back to all of our sports teams. It is recognition for the hard work and dedication they show throughout the season. Congratulations to all the nominees and winners, they were all greatly deserved.”
Winner of the Sportsman of the Year award, and member of the Jamaican Olympic diving team, Yona Knight-Wisdom, said: “It is a great honour to be recognised for the hard work I put in at University and at training every day. I'm very proud to be representing Jamaica and Leeds Beckett in Rio. Congratulations to the other nominees on their incredible achievements.”
Lucy Bridget, Carnegie Cheerleading Match Team Captain and recipient of the Non-BUCS Club of the Year award, added: “It is an honour to be awarded Non-BUCS Club of the Year. In the last three years we've grown from a single competitive team to a diverse club, catering for different styles of cheer and abilities. By offering a match team and two competitive teams this year we have increased our numbers significantly and intend to carry this on in years to come.
“With a three-time national champion team, a brand new team placing second at university nationals, and our student-coached match team supporting BUCS and varsity games throughout the year, we've really exceeded expectations and we are very grateful for the recognition.”
